Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

I had the same problem, but mine was the starter motor, car would die, no power then on a push start would be fine for sometimes two years (yes 2 years) then the problem came back (often in the rain), when old it sucks the power down, I changed it and the problems went away and no more battery drain, it looked like the altenator but it wasn't (i had it tested 3 times!), so if the issue comes back check it out.

This may not be the cause of your problem, but it's an easy one to check.

Good luck, Richard.

Hi Busman,

I was wondering if you could describe how to find the earth strap because i think the issue i'm facing which is similar but just involves my temp gauge moving erratically when I turn things on, is tied to what you described. I know this thread is quite old but i hope you'all still come hear.

Cheers!

If you want to quickly eliminate suspect engine earths, clip a jump lead between the battery -ve terminal and a clean metal surface on the engine / gearbox.
See if it makes a difference.
