New key cost?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Just had a thought if I get a new blade for my old D8 GLX key can I use it as a spare plip key for my D8 LX.
In a nutshell my question is can you code an old key to a different car?

From what I've read the keys are sychronised to the car and not hard coded so I think it will work as long as it's D8 key to D8 car?

only one way to find out mate,

Try it,

but if its from another vehicle you might be best removing the imob/chip from it if it as one,

Key update. After paying £169 for a replacement remote control key for my 406 I went today to have it programmed to the car. They programmed it ok……but failed to tell me that the remote control key is no longer available…and tried to supply a standard key. After 30 mins arguing with the service dept I managed to get a full refund….and kept the new key !! So only half a win really

Some D9's you haveto take it to dealers. Some cant be synced from old key. I tried for 3 whole days. I still have another 406hdi rcl part i know works. But no matter what i tried( even tried swapping over immob chips but it still wouldnt work!)
Phoned dealers & guy said it has to be programmed with their computer at another place-£170 incl new blade& rcl part. When i said i had the rcl part he said it was upto me whether to go ahead with it,but if the part i had wasnt any good & it never worked, they'd still want paid. Suffice to say "stick it up your a-se!" was mentioned!

New key arrived today...changed the chip and engine starts ok....but central locking will not sync to BSI. Apparently all keys have to be synchronized to BSI first time round....after that you can sync it yourself when battery goes flat etc.

Update. Took my car to dealers for reprogramming……..after an hour he gave up. He could get the car to start but not get the central locking working. After talking for a while I revealed I had changed the transponder chip and it appears the chip and key have to be coded together!!! Back next week to try again.
