Changing the battery

Re: Changing the battery
Hi Guys
Sorry to revive on old thread but there are a couple of things I wanted to get cleared up before I attempt this on my 406.
Firstly, what is BSI and how do I know if my 1999 406 2.0 HDI 90 has it?
I've never changed a bettery before, how do I know which battery to get?
Where/what is the radio code? I assume after a new battery the car will just ask me to enter it before being able to use the radio?
Any help appreciated.

Re: Changing the battery
Hello
The BSI is the car's central computer, located over the fuse panel over your right knee. Lots of cars have them, and have problems with them.
On the 406 only D9s (series 2, redesign, facelift etc.) have them, the big change happened in 1999 but no D8 HDi had the 90bhp engine so you do indeed have a BSi.
Replace it with a battery with the same characteristics - size, capacity, CCA etc. You can also Google it, lots of places will tell you which battery you need.
The D9's radio is coded to the BSi, so you don't need a code (assuming this is the original stereo...)

Brilliant earwig, thank you very much indeed.
Is the battery switchover fairly straightforward with the three minutes and 'soft-reboot' and all that? Provided all instructions are followed ofc. I have read the linked thread earlier in this discussion.

Yep. I can't remember the size of the screws off the top of my head but undo the holder bracket first & don't tighten them too much 'cos the box is plastic. Also, watch for a little plastic peg in the bottom of the battery box (if it's still there), this is to stop a battery that's smaller than the case sliding about.

Thank you again earwig
Final question while I red and re-read the '3 minute rule' link - what's a DIAG?

Been away from the forum for a while. I was amazed my login still worked!
Chicken and egg question on the battery change. If you have electric windows, how do you open the driver's side before you connect the battery?

Re: Changing the battery
You need the window open before you disconnect the battery, follow the 3 min rule:
2. Put the driver’s window down, lift the bonnet and ensure all
equipment is switched off.
3. Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the
ignition.
4. Wait for 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery and wait
15 seconds.
5. Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further 10 seconds (do
not open doors.)
6. Switch on the side lights through the driver's window.
7. Switch on the ignition and check system’s functionality

Re: Changing the battery
My problem was putting the battery on an overnight charge - windows up and doors locked overnight for obvious reasons.
Dropped the battery back in, and all worked fine. Will skip the reset for now.
