As the CD lens cleaner didn't work, I resorted to opening up the unit.
Just my luck: the small Philips head screws (and I mean small) could not be undone with size 0 precision screwdrivers or even very small slot head precision screwdrivers. So I carefully drilled off the small screw heads and removed the lid that way. The lens was covered in a fine haze of dirt so I cleaned it with an ear bud soaked in spirit - the surrounding plastics and feed rollers were quite filthy also with a very fine sooty dust film covering them.
I put everything back together sans the screw heads but with the addition of some strategically placed and very taught duct tape...
Hey presto, the CD worked and now I can enjoy the delights of the non-postcode, monochrome, Sat Nav! Ooooh, can life get any better??
yeah its just with the road changing quicker than the software, dont think it too bad though as the software in mine is from 2003 for four years down the road and only got me stuck twice. not bad
Just an update and thanks to those who offered advice.
In the end I did go to the dealer who sold me the car, and they realised that the Peugeot Dealer had got me the wrong disk so they nicked one out of another car, and hey presto it worked fine. Althought the disk did look scratched to hell.
However, over the next 9 months or so it became more unreliable with the message 'Cannot Read SatNat CD' appearing more often until it reached the stage that it could never read it. I'll try changing the disc and if that doesn't work, then it's the lens cleaning operation for me as well (which sounds a pain)
I had all this until I got a s/hand unit from NCS Peugeot Spares. Worked fine since, tells you the road quicker than Tomtom & accurate.
I would say get a recent disc off ebay & make a copy to use in the car.....NEVER use the original which will get scratched & stop working.........what happened to the bumf about cd`s being very touch???
I seem to remember first seeing cds on Tomorrow's World, that Rob whatsisname bad trousers was smearing them with jam and they were still playing. Maybe they decided it wasn't a good idea if cd players had lasers powerful enough to take out satellites...
Yeah I remember that too, I seem to remember that they were smearing the jam on the top (labe side), but of course the playing surface of the CD is underneath.... We were all so used to vinyl that we didn't realise

Actually, the signal layer is just underneath the label, small scratches and that can be polished out the playing side but one scratch on the label and they're f***ed.
I realise this is an old thread but notice its been posted on recently. I've just joined up as now have a 406 SE 110hdi estate with built in sat nav....... (guess whats coming lol)
Found this forum and this thread whilst doing a search as my sat nav is also doing the same (cd unreadable!). I've tried doing a copy of the CD it came with and although that copies fine with no errors, the brand new copy wont read. So I bought a replacement drive unit (as I had tried to clean the lens on the old one with no success) and its doing the same thing. Before I send it back as being broken, I thought it wise to try a known working disc first. £85 from Navteq is way too steep just for a test so was hoping someone kind could possibly 'lend' me a known working copy that I could try?????
Thanks in advance.
EDIT - Ps is Navteqs site that states 2005-2006 for the UK map disc right? I can't believe such a big copmany in the mapping industry only has 2 year out of date maps available????
I think I would try disconnectng the power supply to the unit in the hope that it "forgets" where it lives. Perhaps you could disconnect the leads to the thing for an hour or so? I would say disconnect the main battery (my car doesn't mind this) but with yours being a 2004 model I can't be sure.
Funnily enough when I took my Tomtom one to Spain in June it kept trying to calculate routes from my England address some 1300 miles away even though it knew it was in Spain
