If you have the wipers on auto they will go to intermittant when you are stopped, then go back to full speed as you set off, at least ours did on our 406 and work the same on the 407.
I've done it again Dai

My automatic rain sensing wipers work, but not brilliantly.
If there's just a bit of drizzle, then the wipers often don't come on until the windscreen is completely covered in water, so I normally just give the screen one wipe every so often by pushing the wiper stalk all the way down.
If the rain is fairly coming down, then the auto wipers are generally OK - but by that point I normally just set the wipers to second click (always wiping) anyway.
If it's torrential, then it's set to third click (wiping like there's no tomorrow).
I actually preferred the intermittent (once every 5 seconds) wipe that my Clio had. The rain sensor is a cool feature, but needs to be more sensitive in drizzle conditions.

I seriously wish my Golf had auto wipers. It's such a pain having to fiddle with the intermittent speed to get it right... The 406s ain't perfect but when driving a car without it, you realise how good it really is
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
I used to think my 406 auto wipers worked very well - especially if a truck is coming at you and sprays your car as it goes past, the wipers would sense this imediately. The trouble with anything 'automatic' is that it won't suit everyone all the time and the most common fault is the proper sensing of very light rain.
The Volvo's auto wipers are very very dim witted - you can even 'adjust' the sensitivity yourself, how stupid is that? they are then not automatic at all

In fairness, mine work well most of the time, but can't handle all conditions.
Occasionally they'll refuse to wipe the screen when it's been gradually covered with fine spray or blustery snow, other times it'll suddenly go from a sensible intermittent operation to high speed for reasons that aren't apparent on the bit of screen I look out of, (barely above the scuttle)
In an ideal world, I'd like to have an auto AND an intermittent setting....

SWMBO's fucus has them too, can never seem to get the adjustment to a point where they work properly, the pug's one's are much better.

Oh you can get it right no problem.......just as you finish your journey
They are crap though, in fact I found it helped to (nervously) leave them alone to make their own minds up and they seemed to settle much better then after a fashion
