dash not working properly - intermitant

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

dash not working properly - intermitant

Post by DRTDVL »

I've got a problem with the speedo, fuel guage, and tacho where they are working intermitantly. Sometimes working correctly mostly not.

The fuel guage generally doesnt show a level but the low fuel light works.

The speedo will work but will bounce 10kph, or get stuck on 70kph or just not work.

The tacho will work, not work at all or sit at 1800rpm.

Sometimes smacking the dash can get it working again sometimes (mainly speedo and tacho).

Ive pulled the unit apart and cleaned it, and it can be better but goes back to being screwed not to long after getting it bqck together.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately for us, the French cannot solder. Therefore what you need to do is split your cluster down to the PCB and go over the joints with a soldering iron.

Have a search of the forum and you'll find other threads on the subject with photos to illustrate the process.

Thank Swiss...

I'll try and take pics for a full walkthough for everyone as i pretend to know what i'm doing.

It will be good to have it going again... long trips with no fuel gauge make for fun times...

NP. I always enjoyed having to guess my speed as I coasted through Southampton's many, many 30mph cameras...

I cheated and just did the 4 pins to each dial and that appears to have fixed mine :)

Thanks for that, will remember that if I ever have to apply the fix again in the future :)

Would you consider adding this wee nugget of wisdom to the Wiki?

I spotted 2 pins that where very bad and then decided to do every solder join on the board... It didn't take that long and was watching tv and having a beer at the time.

Sorry didn't get any photos of it as my camera was flat at the time.

But yeah it's all working 100% now... and i managed to get 330km out of 1/4 a tank on the weekend...
