Is this a BSI reset required symptom?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Is this a BSI reset required symptom?

Post by SimonTNUK »

After being left alone for a week, in the sun, my trip computer display has gone weird

It displays the time correctly, but it doesn't display my mpg or the outside temp.
What I've got instead is the trip mpg set-up on my display but no numbers or temperature, a bit like this
Marker post >>__ __,__ mpg __ __ C
This is displayed all the time, whether my ignition is on or off, I can't remember if that is normal or not

I scrolled it through all the display menu setting options, and these all look fine on my display, so my display itself is working fine. It won't scroll through the displayed options, (trip mpg, moment by moment mpg, trip milage etc), it's stuck on trip mpg which is what I normally have up and is what it would have been left on when I parked it at work last weekend.

I'm hoping this is just a heat related glitch and it's is a simple BSI reset job.
Would someone who knows confirm it please, I'm a bit twitchy about doing it if it isn't and that last line in the How To isn't helping, the one that reads
Failure to follow this procedure could result in incorrect operation of many BSI related items.
 :cheesy: :cheesy:

It won't be a BSI issue, but you can reset the trip computer easily enough. Just unplug it then plug it back in :)

Lever out the blanks to the sides, undo the torx screws and out it'll pop...
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

OK, thanks mate, I think I could manage that without screwing anything up
(Well apart from the screws of course :cheesy: )

I quite like dismantling bits of my old Honda bike, fixing them and putting it all back together again, working properly.
But thats a 30 year old bike, no electronics to speak of. Fairly modern cars, with electronics running all the important jobs make me twitchy :)

The electronics can be a pain in the backside when they break, but there's still lots of nuts-and-bolts stuff to play with

I'm about to go out now and change the spark plugs on mine, which involves removing (and cleaning 8) ) the inlet manifold and throttle body

Going to slap a couple of new brake discs on too, along with sanding down the pads (£90 for a set for the V6 coupé so I ain't going to waste good ones!) and filing down the pad backing plates so they fit in the callipers better

I love working on cars :D

Playing with brakes is all good

On the new car first thing i did (as it hadnt moved since december) is take all the brake discs off and attack them with a wire wheel on a drill

Clean as anything now :D

WEll I eventually got round to taking my display out, unplugging and then plugging it back in.
(I didn't think it was worth doing it every week)
I now get the date and the time, but still no temperature and no scrolling through milage, mpg etc.

Just a thought - could the button on your stalk be faulty / disconnected? Your car will have conventional stalks, rather than the COM2000 gubbins, so might be checkable....

Could be, but it worked fine just before everything screwed up.

May be worth sticking a meter across the pins for the trip button on the stalk to check if it is switching :)

try taking the battery out then putting it in again, it can sometimes help in curing some problems but the stalk button sounds like the main issue

Be careful - disconnecting the battery on mine disabled the remote control, which could only be re-synched with PP2000 and the 4-digit pin code you're 'supposed' to get with the car.

I don't think that'll be a major problem.
My lights decided to turn themselves on randomly. As a temporary measure, to preserve a charge in my battery, I'd disconnect my battery whenever I left my car until I got it fixed. That was last year, everything has been fine until recently.

Well I eventually got round to trying that and now I've eventually got round to posting that I tried it, but it's made no difference :(

And now, some time later, central locking on my plip key has stopped working.
I press my plipper, everything locks then immediately unlocks.
I've tried opening and closing all doors and boot lid again, several timed to no avail :(
Locking my drivers door with the actual key makes everything lock ok still, but I miss playing with my plipper

The door locks have microswitches in them so the locking ecu can tell if all the doors are shut properly, if not it just unlocks them again, which is just what yours is doing so it's possibly one of these microswitches up the creek. Or it's a wiring fault (given all your other issues this could be likely)
