Couple of electrical gremlins, help required

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Couple of electrical gremlins, help required

Post by LincsMatt »

I have just bought a W reg 2.0 hdi 110. It has an aftermarket stereo fitted and none of the dash display works. Just wandering if this could be because of the stereo?

Also fuel gauge needle will constantly wave on empty up to full, to 3/4 etc and so on any ideas what causes this?

Regards,
Matt.

The stereo probably won't but the rest of the display should say something.

Welcome on in Matt! :)
You say that none of the dash display works, do you mean the instrument cluster or the MFD?

Sorry I read that back and I didn't put it very well...

It's just the MFD that doesn't read very well, so I took it out today and found 3 blown bulbs. Easy I thought. Replaced bulbs feeling chuffed withmyself, engine on...still blank. Investigated further, took MFD out and opened it up, everything intact and no signs of shorting out at all. Started checking wiring when I discovered black tape. I wish I didn't uncover it. Someone in the past has butchered the lot, I just can't understand why someone would strip wire, make a loop and try put it together that wya?? :x

Anyway, I'm not a wiring genius so one of my friends who's a sparky is sorting that out for me tonight. So fingers crossed I've sorted that!

My stereo has been acting weird though, switch off ignition and it stays on for about 15-20 seconds then goes off. Then when you open the door it comes on again and stays on lol. Not a massive problem as I can turn it off via the power button, but nevertheless strange. Gotta love the French electrics

The fuel gauge is really doing my head in though, and I mean REALLY doing my suede in!!! Wish I had some idea where to start looking for a problem?

All that aside, I thought my old Volvo 850 T5 was comfortable. The 406 is like riding a magic carpet lol :cheesy:

I'd wait until your mate has put right the wiring butchery before you look any further...

Quick update, sorted MFD :cheesy: BUT how do you change it to read mpg, av mpg, range etc? the 2 buttons either side worked to do the clock, date etc but don't do anything now. I don't have anything to push on the wiper stalk, well if I do it doesn't push LOL! I'm probably missing something obvious...but if you don't ask, you don't get :)

P.s. Why do all my posts have to be approved by a moderator before shown :frown:

Because when they didn't need approval we got flooded, and I mean FLOODED, with spam.

Maybe someone's replaced the stalk with one without the button :?

Is changing stalks difficult? I'm not that confident doing that kind of thing to be honest.
