what is multiplex?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

An analogue signal can measured at regular intervals and these amounts are converted into digital values, multiplexing is where a number of these digital values are transmitted down a single carrier (electricity, radio, light...) each either at a regular interval or given an address so they can be split up again at the other end. I think you need to read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canbus

I know yours is a D9, W reg would make it 2000 (I really need to bookmark that page :frown: ) so it's an early one, so the answer is yes, but not as much as later cars.

But that's just a box of switches really so you can have little wires to/from switches in the cabin?, I understood multiplexed wiring was to cut down on a huge bunch of wires all doing different jobs when you can have less wires doing more jobs, err, like..... :?

That's the first time I've seen 'multiplex' and 'yipee' used in the same sentence

and probably the last, that yipee is used sarcastically and it would need to be, dont think anyone would really be thankful about that fact, having said that isnt all new cars all multiplexed now

Yippee, my wheelbarrow's not multiplexed :P

I think you're right, some sort of new law (now that rust's fairly well sussed they had to find another reason for cars to end up in the scrappies  )

thats ballox, that just entices me into opening it up inside, my old record player part of the hi fi system which also comes with a compact disk reader (about one of the first hifis with a cd player i believe) said no user serviceable parts inside when i wanted to change the belt for the record player. The only thing with no user serviceable parts inside is the ipod because by the time you actually crack it open youve ruined that smooth case, and when you get inside there its all one single pcb
