Internal fan

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Internal fan

Post by Tubsie »

Hi All

I've a 406 2.0l HDI Exec whose cabin fan has stopped working completely. Initially this wasn't an issue as most of my milage is on motorways and with the controls set to defrost it keeps the cabin clear, but now as its getting colder it's not the best trying to drive through an internal fog.

When it first stopped working it cured itself (like most electrical issues) by turning of the ignition off and on again. So this leads me to think there's nothing actually wrong with actual fan motor. I have checked the fuses and all appears fine.

I appreciate that being french and electrical its not the greatest marriage and i quite like some of the little quirks that it throws at me but I really need to solve this one or I'll have to buy a german car :(

Any help greatly appreciated

Regards

common problem with this is a crimp connector on the fan itself, have anosy behind the glovebox, remove the fan and you'll probably see a burnt crimp.
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.
Hmmmm, straight 6 goodness!

or try take a look at the ignition switch on the back of the barrel they are renowned for failing or burning out and a failing cabin fan is a known symptom, have a search its all in here somewhere,

i believe a bloody good wiggle of the wires is the approved method of testing, with the ignition on of course, the steering column cowl is a doddle to strip down too, only a couple of torx screws and it pulls apart and the reverse for re-assemble if its not that

dont think a german car is the direct train to a life free of electrical troubles i was in an a6 which seemed to have went mad, all the electric windows opened, the fan was on fully, the dials didnt work and nor did the radio.

There are challenges and herculean tasks and French electrics fall into the later catagory

i didnt mean to say it twice, french electrics just dont follow a convention that makes them as easy to fix as regular electrics, but if you can fix french electrics you deserve a degree no a phd in electronic engineering

You're not alone.....

I think the burnt up connector business is more common on earlier (D8) cars. At least one owner has had this problem and it proved to be a faulty contact on the ignition switch. The electronic modules which control the fan speed fail from time to time, but generally leave the fan on full speed.

I would be minded to run a temporary supply to the fan and prove it's OK first
