Auto dimming mirror

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Auto dimming mirror

Post by PUG162414 »

Hi

I recently purchased a 2000 x reg 406 hdi 110 glx and was wondering whether is was possible to retro fit an auto dimming rear view mirror.
Any help would be much appriciated.

It's funny because driving home last night I thought to myself how I'd never live without an auto-dimming rear view mirror. I think they're a great piece of kit - simple, effective and reliable.

You'd need a power source (not sure if it's there already anyone?) I think mjb fitted one but that may have been to replace his damaged unit?

The 406 has a wired link to the reversing lights somehow so that the mirror clears when you select reverse (not sure how it does this though).

Hopefully we'll be able to help you through it as far as possible.

There's no "how to" as such, but I know who to ask viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8232

Its just one of them things i expect to have in a car, which i shouldnt take for granted since ive never had one before, but a great bit of understated kit really does stop you from getting blinded by tailgaters.

Speaking of getting blinded, some arse in a new Astra came at me last night with the front fogs on so I gave him a flash.......he flashed me back angrilly :?

Self-dimming wing mirrors would be cool too.

Most BMW E46 period cars (i.e. their entire model range, not just the 3 series, from 2000 onwards) have auto dimming mirrors. Some of them look pretty cool, i.e. Z4 ones and have a red clown nose on the bottom which is the alarm flasher. I've got one from a later spec (2000 onwards) Laguna in my 406. The problem with getting ones from other cars is that you need to ensure that you either get the windscreen mount with the mirror, or you get one with the same mount (IIRC the Laguna one fits on the 406 mount), or you get some very good glue, fill the base of the mirror so it's properly flat and then stick it to the screen.

If I got offered a 406 one cheap, I'd probably go for that and swap out the Laguna one, just as the Laguna one is not quite a perfect fit, but close enough.

My old 2003 Megane Dynamique had dimming rear view mirror, so i reckon most Renaults will have them.

Mine's a D8, so yes. You can fit pretty much any one, I've even fitted a BMW one to my 309.

is the sensor on the mirror, my mate who owns a mark 5 golf says his auto mirror only works when he turns headlights on
