replacing alternator brushes
I've ordered a used alternator from an ebay breaker for £35 delivered, with 28 days warranty to replace my dud.
I've repaired old Lucas dynamos and magnetos in the past on my classics Nortons and the like and am quite happy stripping and rebuilding stuff, so am thinking that I might try to repair the existing one for a spare IF I find it's the brushes worn out when I strip it.
Anyone done it? Any ideas where I can get brushes? or will I have to modify my own from something else?
Thanks
Milard

I have a feeling you'll find out when you get it open. Don't forget to take some pictures!

Re: replacing alternator brushes
You might want to replace the bearings while you've got it cracked open as well. I'll be interested to hear how you get on!

OK fellas I'll get the box Brownie out and take some snaps then
Any ideas where I can scource brushes though if that's the prob? and bearings?
I had a search for brushes but no luck.
Unless they're silly sizes I can get the bearing from a local bearing supplier.
cheers

I don't think anyone here has tried a DIY refurb to be honest, you're in uncharted territory I'm afraid millard!

In that case I'll be happy to take some pics and do a write up on a DIY refurb for the knowledge base if anybody can get me a line on brushes.
I've been looking for an hour or so with no luck, but I have to add that my failure rate with internet searches is pretty dismal an depressing

Re: replacing alternator brushes
That'd be very helpful Steve, cheers.
I'll strip the old one when I get it out, maybe some time over the weekend - and get back to you if that's what's needed.
Maybe you could find out price and postage costs please?
thanks
Millard

Re: replacing alternator brushes
I won't know that until I know how many/big they are! 4 I guess. Or is it 2? I'll make some enquiries and give you a ball park figure.
In case they know, what alternator is it?

IF it's the same model then it's a Bosch 14v, 150A, part number looks like 980 044 930, but the label is pretty beat up so not 100% on that.
Won't have time until tomorrow to have a closer look than that, will get back to you asap.
Cheer, Millard.
