1996 1800 petrolcar won't start

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

1996 1800 petrolcar won't start

Post by boris »

Hi there

Please can someone help, engine turns over but car fails to start, fuses all look ok, noise not coming from fuel pump (not priming) so changed that, then onto the multi function relay, changed that £41 robbery, result, still no fire.

wired fuel punp direct to battery, it hummed

Has anyone got any ideas what may be causing this before I waste more hard earned buying new parts that make no difference

cheers

Hi Steve

You didn't mention the immobiliser; I assume that's disarming ok?
May be worth disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes to reset the ECU.

Hi there, thanks for the response

The immobilisor was by-passed 2yrs ago as it kept playing up, basically all 3 brown wires were joined up and it has been starting fine since, bit worried tho as I have put the new relay on and according to Haynes wiring diagram, feed into the relay ok but feed out to fuel pump etc dead (novice use of multi meter). Really do not know what the problem is as I have tried to bump on battery and nothing. I cannot understand where, between power coming to the relay there is no power at the fuse, inertia switch or pump connections! Am I missing a trick here?

Any advise wud be fantastic as dreading towing the girl to a Peugoet dealership, their labour is probably worth twice the value of the car and apart from this she has been reliable as for years and not a breakdown, spot of rust or MOT failure until this problem decided to surface.

Thanks
Steve

I don't know, it's a weird one that!
All I can suggest is to check continuity between each circuit; there must be a break somewhere or a bad earth.
Don't panic, I'm sure between the other guys here we can come up with something!

The D8 petrol starting and running FAQ in the Knowledge Base viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7050 says TDC sensor :? I can't see why that would stop the pump from priming the system though :(

This is probably a dodgy idea but if you hot wire the pump does it start?

I may be mis-interpreting your description of "feed into the relay ok but feed out to fuel pump etc dead ", but this sounds like a faulty relay, or relay not energising to me. (Can you feel it operate as you turn on the ignition)?

As steve says, can you take a direct feed to the pump to prove a point?

Hi There

thank you guys for the advice, I will have a go at direct feeding the pump tomorrow and also check out the sensor, the relay is brand new from local pug dealer and the outcome is the same as when the old one was on so no change at all. Looks like a busy w'end with the car, at least the snow has gone :?
I will post any progress or not, I make tomorrow, thanks

cheers

Hi

again, bigs thanks to you all, shame I wasn't i n touch b4 I bought a new relay and fuel pump, even so, sure I have saved money rather than going to a mechanic / auto electrician (particuarly a main dealer). Advise if anyone else haas similar probs, check the fuel pump works via direct feed, if ok, then check TDC sensor as descibed, last resort change multi function relay.

legands all

cheers
