I don't know where to start!! pls help

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

I don't know where to start!! pls help

Post by Suz83 »

Ok, 406 2.0l HDI

Was losing water having read forums we worked out that it might be the water pump, brought a new one and fitted it, engine ran briefly after this. Then put the rest of the car back together, and it hasn't ran since, it turns over fires once but then just turns on the starter?!? The Engine management light is on and the AA read the code and said its P0341 -camshaft position sensor. So we changed the sensor, with no change.

I am pulling out my hair, any advice gladly recived, thanks in advance.

sounds like the timing is out ?

wen you say you worked out it might be the water pump . was it the water pump ?
think i would have to have concrete evidence rather than might be . especially with the water pump ///

how long did the car run for once you put it back together ?

sounds like cam belt fitted wrong , im presuming the water pump is driven by cam belt same as on my engine , it might have started up on residue of diesel in the engine allready but doubt it would have run for long , get whoever fitted water pump to check the timing , it definatly points to timing fault if its throwing up crank positin sensor .

You need to start by making sure the timing is set right.

Camshaft position sensor fault might indicate valve timing not right.

I think we all agree :D :cheesy:

Thanks,

It ran for minutes after the water pump change, my first thoughts where the timing so I have checked the timing and it seems to be fine.....

you need to re-check it i think, it has to be the timing if it was running before you removed it...... 8)

I agree,

I have spent all day on this, checked the timing more than once, I have had another person check too. The cam and crank tdc hole's are aligned at the same time?!

Does it Struggle to turn over?
Have you tried giving it some "Sniff" eg Easy start etc?.

IF it wont start with the help of Sniff, its not aFuel problem then,

Do you know Anyone with A code Reader?
Might be worth seeing if any other Fault- codes flag up,

""Are You 100% certain the Timing is Acurate on the crankshaft pulley End ?
Iwouid double check that its Easy to get that bit wrong if not locked off properly,

Sorry im not much help :arrowu:

Don't know anyone with a code reader. Local Pug garage want £75 just to plug it in!!!

I have triple checked the timing and am 100% that its in the right place.

Does anyone know if the camshaft position sensor would cause this?

Faulty camshaft sensor can either give the symptoms of : hard to start or run rough,
Did you replace the Sensor with a new part or was it a used part?

Surely that would be obvious, water running out from around the cam belt covers. I'm trying to remember an HDi on here that had a water pump go but I can't. A few head gaskets though. What made you think this was your problem? Btw I'm not saying you're daft, just want to get it all straight.

Did you just unclip the engine ecu and stuff it on top of the engine, or remove it entirely? For the former, there's always the possibility a wire broke, or perhaps pulled out of the connector (cheapo scart plug-style). If you did remove it, perhaps a pin bent. Have a look at all the connectors you touched.

There's also the possibility it's not something you touched at all. The biggest cause of non-starts on HDis is the fuel tank-mounted lift pump. You don't say what version of HDi you have so I don't know if it has one (later 90bhp HDis with Siemens injection don't) but if it does can you hear it running? I guess you'd have got a low fuel pressure warning before it snuffed it entirely but you never know.

the Ecu was never removed and we have fuel pressure from the low pressure pump.

Its a 2001 90Bhp model.

I am proper stumped.....

Thanks once again for taking the time to read this,

The reason I changed the water pump, was we where loosing a lot of water, with no evidence of it being the head gasket, I read on the internet that a couple of other people had had this and it turned out to be the water pump. (thought it was worth the £25 to change) When I took the old pump out there was evidence that there had been a water leak from there.
The engine ran after I had done this and I stopped it so I could put the rest of the can back together, and now it won't go.....
