warning lights on, speedo stoped, general loss of power

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

warning lights on, speedo stoped, general loss of power

Post by winton »

Hi can anyone enlighten me on my car issue please?

I had trouble with the electrics in my GLX 1.8 HDi (w reg) the radio wouldn't come on and warning lights were flashing. I changed the battery and it seemed to sort everything, but i still get warning lights. Also my speedo sometimes cuts out and the car looses power then all of a sudden it kicks back in and the speedo is fine. the other day it wouldn't let me get past 2500 revs in first and second and it was kind of "pulling back" or "choking" on me. the car is generaly quite unresponsive and seems like it doesn't want to rev, and easy to stall when you are pulling away.

I'm thinking electrical / fuel injection fault but i dont know much about cars!!!! Someone suggested it could be the oxygen sensors? do diesels even have these?

Help :!:

thanx

Yep, we kind of guessed that

:P 406 HDis come in three flavours - 2.0 90bhp, 2.0 110bhp and 2.2, but presumably it really is an HDi so this isn't too relevant.

The speedometer/power thing is fairly straight forward - the engine management needs to know the speed of the car, if there's any problems with the connections to the speedo transducer on top of the gearbox, or the unit itself is fubared, then it'll have a bad hair day.

Which warning lights are flashing? Anything meaningful on the display?
