no air from blower vents

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

no air from blower vents

Post by guttley »

Hi all, any help at all will be appreshiated
Ive just got a 98 1.9tdi 406 estate with digital heating but can hardly get any air out of the vents, i can hear the fan spinning and hear the motor turning to change the vent position, ive also checked the pollen filter and its still the same with it out.

Many thanks

So you are getting some air through the vents? That eliminates the standard ignition wire fault as it wouldn't work at all, could be a stuck pot in the control unit.
If you're lucky you might find a replacement unit from a scrapper to test. If you're struggling I have my old one which works but has a crack in it and the manual fan button cover is missing but will be plenty good enough to test.

i assume from Glyn's post there is some air coming through and the fact that he can hear the vents opening and closing and the fan working suggests to me it's stuck on the lowest setting. That's why i suggested swapping the controller, alternatively push some power through the fan with a battery and check it spins?
I have the same unit in my car and if left in auto it very rarely ramps up the fan speed even on the coldest mornings, I have to manually crank the blowers up to full in the morning to clear the screen.

Come to think of it I don't ever remember actually hearing the vents opening and closing, but then again the fan is normally running at the time !

maybe the motor that controlls the vent position is stuck ?

If you wind the fan up full and then change the direction you can definitely hear the change as the flap moves.

Hi sorry for the delay and thanks for all the replies, i managed to try a different controller but still the same
the temp changes from warm to cold and back again, i can change the different vent positions, change the fan speed but still hardly any air comes out
think next step is to take it all out n have a look

So it all seems to work, just no air comes out of anywhere? Is the pollen filter blocked?

So I guess either the matrix is blocked up with crud or one of the pipes that feed the dash vents is off. Weird.
