Heaters not working!! Please help it's cold!!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Heaters not working!! Please help it's cold!!

Post by mattyf »

Hi all,

I’ve been searching through so many post regarding heaters and I can’t seem to find anything that sounds similar to my problem.

Right .... well first thing yesterday I jumped in my car and turned the heater on to let the car warm up and drove to the petrol station 5mins down the road. Once I finished filling up I tried turning the heaters back on, but it didn’t work and hasn’t worked since.... Got the old Haynes manual out and I can’t tell head nor tells of it so I’m going to throw it out there and hope someone has an idea ....

Please help, it’s cold!! pmsl

Cheers

Matt

Not sure if this'll be the ignition switch connector (possibly D8 only), the wiring (looky) or the transistors on the motor (looky 2).

Cheers matey ....

I hope it's the ignition switch connector not the transistors because I'm really not electrical minded, I don’t suppose anyone has any pictures of the transistor fix? :?

It could be the control unit for the fan. In my car (with ECC), there is a black box at the passenger side (is a LHD, migth be the other side for RHD), there where the feet normaly are, just next to the center console, bolted to the bulkhead. I believe it has a green connector, but I'm not sure about that. This ECU has failed in my car, fan was not working anymore.

Not sure if this will help you Matty as you didn't say if it was a lack of heat or the fans weren't kicking in.

A few years back my brother in law fixed the heating in my Punto by swapping the inlet and outlet houses where they pass through the bulk head. He said the matrix can get blocked with crud over time and swapping the hoses can move the blockage.

Obviously this wont fix every problem but it's a cheap trick to try if you're not getting much heat through the vents and you know the fan is working.

I would advise anyone trying it to swap the hoses back afterwards and give it a proper flush through.

Thank you all .... well I will go into it a bit deeper!

I’ve managed to sit in the car and tried the controls for the fan and vents ...

Hot air – CHECK
Vents move – CHECK
Fans working – NOPE!!

I’ve checked the ignition switch connector and nothing seems to be wrong there.

Will try swapping the hoses, but I think as the air gets hot in might not be that ... but always worth a go.

Control unit looks like a possibility .. it’s a RHD so I’m guessing it will be in the passenger footwell (On the left).

Thanks again all .... but any more suggestions would be REALLY appreciated!! Might even buy Cakes if it gets fixed :P .. man it’s cold  !!

if you're getting heat but no fan there is little point swapping the hoses, take the cover from under the fan in the passenger footwell and get busy with some wd40 on the connectors, also look for any blackening, mine had cooked the big connector carrying the live feed due to a bad earth. If all looks good try a battery on the fan and see if it spins.

it be morethan likely the control box as burnt out or a Dry joint,

take carpet cover off from under Glove box look to the right and you will see a little box sticking out of the heater box its held in place by 1 8mm bolt its fiddly to Get at but once you have that out just pull the box and itl come out,

(!!the Burnt wires shown in Roylewas and Garrys threads dont have any Reference to d9s the d9s dont have them conectors!!,
ihadmy dash in bits looking for them  )

Have you not done the checks for a faulty heater control module? Look behind the centre console you should see some wires going to and from the module, look for power to the thick red and black wires to the right, if you have power here check for power at the other side red and black wires...no power here means a faulty module (the engine has to be running when you check for power at the heater control module wires). Sometimes waggling the big wires can put the highest speed on.

Check that your fan is actually working by removing it and putting 12 volts from a battery to the terminals it's only held in with 3 screws under the glove box....be careful if it runs it will spin very fast and will not be covered so watch the fan blades.

Where abouts are you refering too behind the centre console mate?
the only thing on mine that looks like a resistor pack the top of it is Green- it goes up wards near the side of the dash upwards and its held inplace by a 8mm bolt once its out you can see a metal cooler on it,

icarnt see anything on mine behind the centre console :?

ive had to loop a live feed to mine to get the blower to work theres no ign feed

If you look to the right with the felt removed under the passengers side you can see wires going to and from the module, the module is held in by a small bolt/screw and it has a cooler on it about 4 inches long, on my car it was directly behind/under the centre console with thick red and black wires going to and from it.

It was a bit tight getting it down from inside the heater box.

I think the connector blocks on the bottom of the module were green.
