Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Adding Climate Control

Post by ZilogJones »

I just bought a 2002 Rapier HDi saloon a couple of weeks ago, still new to all this 406 stuff :D
Anyway, can climate control be retrofitted on these? Is it a straight swap or is rewiring required? I believe there's a cabin temperature sensor somewhere - would this already be present? I already have aircon, and it seems to work well which is surprising 8)

Are you sure it's a Rapier? As far as I knew in 2002 the only 406s that didn't have climate were the base L models.

Retro-fitting climate control pretty much involves pulling the whole dashboard out, and replacing more or less everything behind it. Not a recommended job sorry

Its a huge job, the BSI controls the climate control, there is a load of extra wiring, and solenoids and stepper motors doing the work for the climate control.
I do have a spare climate control panel lying around but it will really be of no use.

Sure about that? My D9 and previous D8s ran it all from the CC panel...

Thanks guys, that's definitely too much work for me, I was hoping it might be one of those easy jobs where the wiring is already there, like the heated seats :)

It's a Paddy-spec Rapier :cheesy: It's got half-leather interior and fake brushed metal dash/door trim, could it be anything else?

Sounds like it's had a few DIY upgrades over the years if it's got upmarket items like the half leather, but no climate. I always thought Paddy spec was a 1.6 or 1,4 engine in a large family car? Usually is everytime I go over.

You're confusing Paddy spec with Pikey spec now...

Yeah that's usually what it means, but often because of prohibitively high VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax) the higher trim levels are often a bit lower specced than UK equivalents too. I'm surprised it has EBD and side airbags because of this. It's on steelies too, which doesn't seem right for a UK Rapier either.

Service Box lists everything that's fitted, and on closer inspection the registration cert says it's a Rapier too, so I'm pretty certain it is one. Anyway, going a bit OT here :) It's still a massive upgrade from my old car, even without climate control!

Well mine sometimes do that, why ?

In fact when it does that it comes a sound behind the glove box like something as hammered another thing .... ( i think this is the piece that opens and close the air that comes in from outside, i notice this because when i turn this button on , it makes the same sound )

The noise behind the glovebox sounds like a problem with the recirculation control motor, seems like a common enough fault (only been here a week and have seen it mentioned enough times!). I'm kinda scared of using it at all seeing as they seem to fail so consistently :| Search for "recirc", you should find more info here about it.
