Towbar 7-way bypass relay......yay or nay!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Towbar 7-way bypass relay......yay or nay!

Post by 406hdi02saloon »

406hdi mk2 2002 saloon, 2.0, diesel, couple of dints, smells of dog, half tank of fuel.

After googling for hours and emailing several towbar companies i am still at a loss as to whether or not i need a 7-way bypass relay fitted to my 406 when i connect the towbar wiring?
i have had someone who sells them telling me i do need one (advice i take with a pinch of salt).
someone else has said that if i remove a bulb and no lights come on the dash with ignition on then i dont need one (i tried this and no lights came on)
i have also read that all face lift 406 do need them!???

maybe harry hill could have a 406 without a bypass relay and one with a bypass relay on his tvburp and they could fight it out?

do i need one? and if i dont then fit one will it cause damage?

Thanks for letting us know :cheesy:

They don't have any bulb warning system no, but I thought it might be something to do with upsetting the BSI in some weird and not so wonderful manner...

Thanks for your question and answer. I plan on wiring a socket up to my car in the next few weeks and you saved me hours of aimless searching as to go for the bypass or just wing it and hope  .

ps.

406hdi02saloon did you once own my car ??? The description of your car describes my 406 exactly

406 D9 2002 in Met blue . Full leather interior. Fully working puddle lights (LED's). Both interior lights work from the front switched light (LED's). Door handle Lights (internal LED's). Yup i love LED's but not as much as the BSI does .

haha possibly!

have also recently fitted 12s wiring as i got a caravan, there is a thick red wire already wired to the driver fusebox and goes to the rear ns light cluster, that saved me having to wire one in to the battery. just had to pop a fuse in at fusebox and connect other end to my 12s split charger. just thought id let you know as it would save a lot of hassle if you are doing 12s.

Hey folks - I'm fighting with getting my self installed 7 way in. Not working with bypass relay at the moment! Gonna take it out and try again. But - does anyone know if I can find the fog light feed in the nearside rear cluster?

Sort of cross post of: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=24261

Thanks
