heated mirrors

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

heated mirrors

Post by mattyg »

Hi all

Noticed this morning that my heated mirrors dont work. Ive had the car since may so not noticed before, everything else on the car works fine im presuming that they come on with the heated rear window ? Going to check the fuses today as it was dark this morning if the fuses are ok has anyone had a simular problem

Thank Matt

They do come on with the hrw & use the same fuses & relay in the BSI. It seems heating elements are known to fail / partially fail according to other posts I've seen a year or two ago. Try a search, (there's some info on changing them somewhere).

As a test pop the glass off one of the wing mirrors and see if you've got 12v at the connectors. They are spade connectors and these do go quite brittle with age; if they have snapped off then if there is enough of the spade sticking out you could probably solder it back on.

You'll need a small flat headed screwdriver; aim the mirror all the way up and look up behind the base of the glass. You should see 2 prongs sticking down next to each other; push one of these towards the other and it should unclip from the glass; you may have to do the same with the other one. They are part of a circular clip which locates on the back of the mirror glass. You should then be able to pull the glass off, watch out for the heater wires!

Hi there

Well had a quick look rear window heater not working either although the heated window switch will iluminate all fuses are ok. This seems to be pointing to the relay how easy is it to remove and where is the bsi.

Thanks matt

This may help: http://www.petrila.net/pug/Service/index.htm

The BSI is above/behind the passenger fusebox. Be CAFEFUL!!

The BSI is potentially fragile and very expensive to repair/replace.

At least some of the relays are soldered into the board, (but there are some fuses around the outside which are replaceable).

Suggest you exhaust all other possibilies before attacking the BSI.....

There is also a BSI reset procedure in the knowledge base, which is worth trying before anything more drastic

Sorry for hijacking - I only realised my mirrors are heated a couple of weeks ago (only bought the car in March), but the passenger-side one doesn't seem to work. I took it apart and there is power going to the spade connectors when there should be. Can I buy a replacement heater element on its own or is it the whole glass that needs replacing?

It'd be nice to be able to use that mirror on cold mornings with all these crazy cyclists around, many with no lights! :frown:

Had exactly this with my first 406. If you talk to a pug dealer, they will sell you the lens with the element for I think £35-40. They don't seem to sell the elements seperatly, which is what happens with trucks and coaches. At that stage, i gave up. At least the drivers side one worked.

Yeah I went to the dealer earlier in the week, he wanted about €60 for the glass and element. :(

There's a few on eBay for much cheaper, like this: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/96-03-PEUGEOT-40 ... 4157cc7729

Not sure of the quality though...

Mine have never worked

Pondering an inverter and cramming a couple of cheapo soldering irons in the mirror housings...

Why an inverter? You :cheesy: can get 12 volt soldering irons...
