Airbag Light & Error

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Airbag Light & Error

Post by Ryan »

Hi Everyone!

I am in hope someone can help me out here, having a horrendous day with my car here. Apart form being in the garage after breaking the front spring and my rear wheel jamming and dragging again (handbrake related) I have now been reading that the MOT will fail in 4 weeks due to the air-bag light staying on :( :(

Tried to get the garage to repair the handbrake to be told on phone I have a catalogue of disasters  but the main thing just now is this flippen air-bag light and fault warning when I start the car. I do not recall it being on when I bought it second hand but think (and it really is just think) it may be after me moving the seat. So what would you suggest I look at first under there, what should I but to assist (any cleaning sprays etc) I am also unsure if the horn is connected to all this problem...A few times when I have tried to honk the thing its not worked to then begin to work later

I am thinking if I can solve this problem then I would be 100% behind getting all the other work done for the MOT but if its this Comm 200 thing??? I am fearful that I am going to not manage this financially!!

A really horrendous day today

Anyway, thank you in advance and in the mean time I will continue to search through the site for more help :|

Two potential airbag-related issues. Most common is the connectors underneath the front seats; disconnect one, clean the connectors, and then reconnect it - then go on to the next connector. That way, you re-seat the connectors and don't lose track of where each one went. Make sure they get a really good solid connection.

The other issue is a bit more involved. My Coupe had a problem with the horn when I first got it - I had to absolutely mash the pad in order for the horn to sound at all. So I took it to a garage, and they took the airbag pad off and repaired the contact. But when I got it back, the airbag light was on - turns out in replacing the airbag pad, they'd accidentally damaged the wire that goes to the airbag, and they fixed it for me for free.

Basically, I'd start with the connectors under the seat, and if that doesn't fix it, then I reckon you need a quick diagnostic session so the garage can see exactly what airbag-related fault is being triggered.

Thanks for that!!! I am going to look at it again tomorrow!! I did notice the wires under the seat. Most are going along the bar and it looks like they are sealed in a plastic type sheet. There are 3 plugs hanging from the bottom of seat itself but only 1 of them has a cable going in to it!! other two have nothing hmmm

I am going to look for pictures to see what it is supposed to look like then compare it!

Very much appreciated as always Highlander!! :cheesy:

Sorry to hear about all the problems.
These stupid new MOT rules are infuriating -- I too have the airbag light on almost constantly.

I've found that if I tilt the passenger seat back and fiddle with the red connector at the front centre underneath the seat then the airbag light will go out for a bit. If you're luck then this will be enough to get you through an MOT.

If it's still problematic then the next step is to replace the connectors with permenant connections. I haven't done this yet, but it's looking increasingly like I'll have to.

Thanks RWB

When out for a fiddle about...I did not know there were any under the passenger side   I noticed that two of the plug connectors have been taped up with black electrical tape with just the red one (green wire) not taped!! The others have orange wires going in (taped ones) So I take it the previous owner has been at this already

I was going to go and get some Electrical connection cleaner from halfords! I take it is fine do unplug and spray and reconnect again.

I am bricking it in-case I do something to the air bags and set them off

Getting worried now....Found the following on Ebay and its listing some of my problems:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COMM-2000-DAV ... 27c6141197
is your horn not working (sometimes airbag light might come on)or
when you indicate right and it clicks off does it put the left indicator on itself
I have noticed the indicator thing lately...going around a roundabout to the right and then aware of the indicator on and signalling left after around the thing. I actually thought I was hitting it at first!! My horn is working today but at times I need to continue to press it before it works  and we know about the light!!

I suppose the question is though.... how the heck is the guy sorting these!! wish someone more local could do them!!

Hello
I'm reading this with interest. The MOT is next week and the Airbag warning lamp has been on for a long time.
The 406 is a W reg, 110hdi in LX trim. An automotive electrician visited and, in the hour he worked on the fault finding , he was unable to get his diagnosis computer to talk with the air bag controller. He gave a very glum prognosis and mentioned main dealer only repairs of the controller.
Anyway in the slim hope that he's mistaken I looked under the front seats like Ryan here.

Passenger's Seat

What's the loose green wire with the orange connector body on each seat? Heated seat ?
What are the connected wires in view? Lots of insulating tape around connectors in view.
I hope for a miracle cure or Liontech being able to fix the lot.

cheers
David
