D8 Cruise Control Retrofit

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Pull the upper edge of the carpet back a bit (in line with the brake pedal IIRC) & you should be able to feel it about 3" down from the top of the carpet. It's visible from under the bonnet too, but difficult to reach.
That sounds perfect, I will investigate. I need to get hold of the ECU connector from a scrap car, I know of a local scrappy with a 2.1 in, so I will head over there when I have time.

Brilliant, thanks very much :)

A couple of other noteworthy things from reading the Xantia threads:

1) The brake/clutch pedal switch wiring is a redundant system, it's not actually required for the ECU to disable cruise. The ECU already has a brake signal on pin 2 (from the primary brake switch), and can tell from the vehicle speed sensor and crank position sensors when the clutch has been depressed. This is the primary method used to disengage cruise. As such, it is possible (not that I'm planning to, nor advise it) to just supply a fixed 12V signal to pin 1 of the ECU. It will still disable cruise properly as required. However I think the redundant system is important, so I will be wiring up the pedal switches.

2) After hard braking, the ECU will subsequently disable cruise for about 5 minutes. I think this can be overridden by holding one's foot on the brake whilst turning cruise off and on again, but I'm not quite sure. There seems to be a bit of disagreement about this.

The 2nd brake switch is termed 'redundant brake switch' in PP2000. Note that on cars like mine, it must activate before the main brake switch on pressing the pedal and release after it, for cruise to work.

You also have to be in 4th or 5th gear, (which it calculates from engine vs road speed) and doing at least 30 mph.

Thanks Doggy!

It seems that the EPIC ECU also requires you to be in 4th or 5th and travelling more than about 30mph. I will have to investigate what the ECU wants to see in relation to when the brake switch is pressed in relation to the primary switch, but I'm sure a bit of fiddling will sort that out.

Found some documentation on the EPIC system, including a full pin description of the ECU:

Translations:
Pin 1: Brake pedal redundant switch (+12V when brakes not applied)
Pin 28: Control stalk acceleration (+12V when stalk pushed to Accelerate position)
Pin 29: Cruise control armed (+12V when cruise is armed)
Pin 32: Control stalk deceleration (+12V when stalk is pushed to Decelerate position)

Yeah that thread is where I got most of the information from, very useful it is too! There's a discussion in there about overriding the redundant pedal switches and how it's not a good idea :)

I think I've enough information to do everything, but if someone has done this on a 406 2.1 then so much the better.

Thanks again for posting on that forum Doggy, your French is certainly better than mine.

Thanks Doggy, also keeping an eye on the thread. I'm regularly checking eBay, autotrader, gumtree etc for 2.1s with cruise. Nothing as yet...

Good to know, cheers. I assume this was on your Exec rather than the LX?

Thanks.

I've got the stalk, steering column cowling lower half, enable button, pedal switches and grommets on order from Ade the Coupe breaker, should be here soon.

Once things turn up I'll get the multimeter out and examine the OEM wiring. Also planning to head over to the scrappy and get the ECU connector from a 2.1 over there.

Few bits arrived today from Ade. First time I've dealt with him, what a friendly and helpful chap!

Still waiting for the ECU connector and the cruise enable button and plastic surround, these should be arriving in the next few days.
