STOP "central warning light"

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

STOP "central warning light"

Post by DrRog »

Hi folks,
A troublesome issue keeps coming back.

My red STOP "central warning light" light keeps coming on, usually once the engine has warmed up, after a couple of miles, or after it has been started twice, (ie. I have stopped for a bit and let some heat soak in maybe)

I started a thread on the other forum, and have changed the oil and filter.
http://www.peugeotforums.com/forums/406 ... ues-22285/

I can't see anything wrong on level or leaks etc. The fans seem to work. The car seems to have done only 130k which for a 2.1TD is not a lot.

Interestingly it tends to come on as a slight glow, then slowly get brighter. I can't believe this is indicative of proper function. :? Some days it does not come on at all, but I might have been doing too short journeys.

Any ideas?
Has anyone had a similar experience and how was it resolved?
Cheers
Rog

keep an eye on your coolant temp.
My d9 takes the hump with me saying coolant temp too high and the temp dial reads 0 (thats after its played the Tadddaa limp home mode moment tune of death beeps)
about 30 seconds later the temp dial moves up from cold or hits 90 after a start stop engine off session on the taxi rank

The height of lazyness  is me not going and cleaning the contacts on the temp sensor in the engine bay .

Might be easy fix 8)

The STOP light is not always cooling system related - my daughter's 206 for example did this when the brake fluid was low.

Indeed, this is a comon issue, and really tells us nothing on its own, as it is normally related to something else. It could be an isssue of let it develope while keeping a carefull eye on your gauges.
Is there anything else at all that dosent work or is iffy? It might even be a bad earth from something totally different.

If your temp gauge is behaving itself and fans are cutting in I'd be inclined to think it's not coolant related.

Being a D8 LX like mine I'm assuming you don't have an oil level gauge so that is a possible problem but I'd have thought you'd get the stop light from the first turn of the key, but could be wrong. Did you notice how much came out when you did the change? Which oil did you use?

If all the visual checks look ok I'd be inclined to whip the clocks out and check all your warning light bulbs are working as a first step. I usually plug them into the glow plug socket as an easy test.

If my D9 had bulbs, I'd have to use the airbag one.

It happens with mine after I leave it unused for long periods. What works for me is cleaning the 'Bitron' temperature sensor terminals ( it's bolted to to the fuel filter housing and identified by its brown connector) 5min job and seems to work every time.

Usually on D8's it pops up with low oil pressure.
My D8 used to do exactley as you said, used to flicker dimly and get brighter. It was fixed with an oil change.

It sounds like your oil pump may be past it's best.
