Battery draining

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Battery draining

Post by dgt »

Hi all :)

Noticed my 1.9TD is draining the battery fairly quickly. Just put a new battery in a few days ago, I went to start it earlier and I knew straight away by how dim the dash was that the battery was almost dead!

I had a problem before with courtesy light switches, both on the door pillars and in the boot. They are all broken  I disconnected the bulb in the boot but left the interior light switched off.

Is this a common problem? What else could be wrong? Could it be just faulty switches?

Thanks for any help :cheesy:

Alternator not doing it's job? could even be a dodgy battery mate get the dealer you got it from to check it... If he's any good he'll check the alternator too to prove it's not his fault.

Alternator works alright, the car cranks well after a drive. Battery light also goes out when I start up! :)

It's on it's 3rd different battery, the one it came with I decided it wasn't great, got another one, drained it too, now tried a different one, it was about a month old in daily service and working well, now flat and currently charging up!

Have they given you the wrong battery? i know the hdi's need a strong battery not sure about the 1.9td though? I had a similar problem back in January it would be a sod to crank you could hear there wernt enough power to turn the engine over in the mornings but after a run it was fine... (unless your wiring a tow hitch with the boot light on)

The ampage on mine is 675 any idea what yours is?

Currently there is a 60ah batter in the car, it will take a 70ah battery... been told 55ah is plenty big for it by 2 different motor factors! :|

Could it be related to the constant live feed? I had to bodge the stop solenoid when I got the car, it was connected into the glow plug relay before that and wouldn't work right! :(

I tried to get as close to 70ah or 700 as it says on mine as possible, 60ah should do the job unless the battery is dodgy. Not sure about the live feed have you tried disconnecting it for a few days?

When the car is disconnected, the battery is fine and starts up perfect :)
