Few Issues On My New 406

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Few Issues On My New 406

Post by Demondriver »

Hi all,
Only had my 406 estate for a few days and having issues... It's a 406 HDI Rapier estate.
The main issue is I broke down and had to phone the AA out was diagnosed as the starter motor siezed. So after 6 different ones it started about 5 times no problems then started the same again making the high pitch whining noise. It will bump start, or if I put it in first and rock the car with ignition on... Sometimes if I adjust the earth cable it starts once then not again I've used some 40 grit sand paper on the box and the earth terminal but no change...

Another problem I've never had (even on my 306 estate) the central locking won't work from outside the car or inside unless the ignition is on? Really confused me this one I have to have the ignition on lock it turn the ignition off and open the drivers door (all others stay locked) then just lock that door outside.

Any help or opinions much appreciated

Hi, welcome to the forum :D

Has anyone looked at the starter ring gear?

Sometimes if the teeth are worn in a particular spot you will get a high pitched noise as the starter gear is trying to engage, sometimes the flywheel will stop at a good tooth and work fine.

Take out the starter and check the teeth on the flywheel.....

Not sure about the locking, but it might be water in the electrics under the drivers carpet....do a search and you may find something or someone more electrically minded might know.

A member had a similar problem with the central locking (amongst other things) a wee while ago, turns out someone had played silly buggers with his fuse panel before he got the car. So, check the fuse panel first for a blown (or missing) fuse...

All fuses seem to be ok but will double check

Also the speedo sometimes knocks off for abit then comes back on randomly unsure if its connected? but everything else works... when i turn the engine off the rev counter and fuel etc stay at what they were when i turn the ignition back on the will jump little bits back down the come back up as usual if you understand me?

Cheers
