Electrical disaster!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Electrical disaster!

Post by dgt »

Hi all :)

My 1998 1,9TD developed a rather annoying electrical issue. When closing the sunroof, it just stopped mid shut and set the battery light off on the dash. The passenger windows and elec mirrors also refuse to work. Strangely, when starting the car, the drivers window and heater fan won't work but after a few minutes the battery light dimly lights and the window will function. When the passenger window is pressed, the light illuminates fully :frown:

Any ideas as to what has happened? This one has really left me scratching my head!

It Might be a problem with The sun roof Motor or Wiring to it,
if its Iluminating the Battery light id say thats an Earth problem .

Wind the sunroof back and take the Fuse out for it, and see what happens

There shouid be away of Winding back the Sunroof by hand, not sure on peugeots but on some cars theres a Hidden tool
like a z shaped key incase they Fail to go back electronicly

I had the relay out but no difference!

I have the sunroof wound back, had to do it in a service station! You use an allen key, be weary mine was very stiff closing....

I changed a relay under the dash, this made the passenger window work through its own switch but the electrics are still very iffy.

The drivers window only works when the car is warm for some reason... :?: It has me totally confused as to why!

Ok this is really annoying me now!

The windows won't wind down unless I rev the engine to about 3k rpm. A relay clicks, the battery light comes on and the windows work once more....

Anyone got any ideas?

Lordy  What's the battery voltage doing when you do this? I don't think it'll be the alternator as everything should at least make some attempt, even if the voltage is low. Possible HR somewhere, but why the battery light? Unless it's a short circuit somewhere - eek!

Check charging voltage. Check alternator + battery connections. Find that relay!

I'm sure this is too simple but:
At low revs the alternator produces less than 12v. Therefore things working when you rev implies low battery voltage. Have you measured this? How old is your battery?
dgt wrote: when starting the car, the drivers window and heater fan won't work but after a few minutes the battery light dimly lights and the window will function
Maybe that's long enough for the alternator to put some charge into the battery.

But what's it like to start?
Does it take a lot of cranking? Does it sound lazy?
Any trouble with pre-heat? Every XUD I've driven always needed the glow plugs to start.

Added load drains battery more. Still consistent with duff battery.

How good is the battery? Can you try a different one?

Plan B: can you disable circuits by pulling fuses/relays until the problem goes away, and thus determine in which system the problem lies?

Brand new battery

75ah, 550cca. Even with a dud battery, it never did that!

The battery light doesn't come on when the key is in the acc position either :(

Starts on the button :D No problems from the glow plugs and starts like it was just stopped :cheesy:

This is it's 3rd battery in about 3 months  but I know this one is quite good.

I never thought of disabling the circuits... I must try that in daylight :)

As for the vids, there was a lovely sound from the exhaust, but twas too loud on the ears  currently use a backbox with no baffles, I have a vid of it on my channel

Id say as a Guess theres a Bad earth somewhere,

have you tried the old jump lead trick,

connect one end to negative post on Battery and other too good earth point on Engine,

Might not be a Earth strap problem but its worth a check,

Checked and rechecked the earths in the passengers side and the drivers side, all fine :)

Tried the jump lead trick, no difference!

Decided that the only way to get it working properly is to do it myself.... And rewire it separately :cheesy:

Has anyone got a schematic of the drivers loom? Or which wires are which? Ie power to the switch?

I would be very supicious about the alternator, a possible rectifier fault.

Just changed it earlier today, was a bosch unit got a mitsubishi unit to replace it. The relay now clicks at a much lower rpm (approx 1200 rpm) but the battery light still comes on and still clicks the relay when I press the passenger window button...

Its the yellow relay behind the fusebox clicking, what does it do?

The small yellow relay that goes in here...

What does it do? Can anyone tell me where the wires go and what they do? Same for the sunroof relay, I think the 2 are linked...
