What size tyres are you running, are they at correct pressure and what are you validating speed against?

Most speedos aren't very accurate. I would suspect you have been checking it against a sat nav? You'll probabley find the error gets greater as the speed increases. I recon mine over reads by about 5% give or take. So 70 on the sat nav is about 74 or 75 on the speedo. Like all car gauges, they are not accurate to any remotely scientific degree.codgod wrote:car is totally original.ive had car for 4 years and i can tell its running about 8mph too fast.

Re: SPEEDO READING TOO FAST.2.0 HDI
I changed my standard wheels for 16" alloys and my speedo now over reads by 2 to 3% according to both my sat navs.
If the car is completely standard 8 mph at 70 = 78 mph which takes you just over the legal limit of 70 +/- 10% so I'd get it checked or drive accordingly.
I'm assuming you mean it's over reading by a percentage to give you 8 mph over read at a given speed not a constant 8mph over where you're doing 8mph standing still.
Not being overly familiar with the new-fandangled HDI engines possibly a BSI reset may recalibrate the speedo - any other members care to comment?

It will work from the vehicle speed sensor in the gearbox - effectively, it measures the speed of the drive shafts.
