Immobiliser Fuse (10A) keeps blowing !

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Fault :- Fuse in Underbonnet Fuse box 10A blows whilst driving (engine stops !!!!, go to restart non start and Immobiliser lamp stays illuminated).

Replace fuse car started ran ok for a short time from next cold start....reversed out of drive ...same fault occured !

Hi,

My guess wouid be the connector in the footwell wiring,
have you noticed any dampness in the carpet?

Might not be that tho,

Was 2001 a bumper year for 406 sales? :( I'd ask the semi- or full-mux question again but I'll get a better idea once we see some pics.

If the pics don't clearly identify, post the fuse number too.......

Methinks we needs a sticky
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

found the fuse function, please see pic...now all i need is to find the splice that separates the different feed wires ...the +12v's to isolate them individually ? i have not lifted the fuse box to see if its several different individual wires crimped to the output terminal of fuse 24 or does anyone have a wiring diag ?..longshot i know ?

cheers

That looks kind of semi-mux to me. I suspect the under carpet connector thing is a full-mux "feature" but I could be wrong.

I did have a wiring diagram, up until a few days ago when my pc had a nervous breakdown. Looks like I'll have to get installing...

hi steve,

thanks for the heads up...if you manage to get the wiring diagram or further info drop it to us ...got this from autodata.
autodata.JPG
...not sure how accurate it is...trying to locate the splice is where i want to isolate the individual curcuits...any thoughts ?

thanks

I just stuck Sedre on this machine (takes hours) but I've already realised it doesn't show splices for semi-mux cars :( I can post a wiring diagram but I suspect that it's not going to get you any further. I also doubt the splices for a full-mux car would be any help.

According to this diagram, coming off of fuse 24 are...
1320 : engine management control unit
1620 : vehicle speed sensor /
1150 : pre-heat control unit /
1310 : air flowmeter

Perhaps you could try pulling the connectors for all these and seeing what is on the fuse with a multimeter.

Err...what's Sedre ?...and Semi mux ?......

yes will go through the obvious wiring chafting etc then try and get the fuse to blow again !!!its one of them intermmittent faults, worse kind eh.

I have made up an extension to the fuse postion, got a 10A circuit breaker mounted by the steering wheel, if it blows whilst im driving down the motorway...no pwr steering etc etc !!i can reset instantly (if the short is just a spike !)

thanks for the heads up...whatcircuit detial do you have ?

cheers

SEDRE - Peugeot's own wiring diagrams which cover D9 (facelifted from June 1999) 406s (amongst others). All D9s are multiplex but early cars (up until July 2001) don't have as much of it as later cars, so we decided to call the earlier cars semi-mux and later cars full-mux to be able to differentiate without going into too much detail. I'm pretty sure yours is a semi-mux as the fuse panel looks nothing like my full-mux 406.

The wiring diagrams I have for semi-mux cars look like microfisches, I suspect that this is because that's how they started life.

Intermittent faults have driven me bonkers in the past so I have a pretty good idea what you're going through :(
