Please Help, Ive been sold a pup! (2.2HDi coupe)

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Please Help, Ive been sold a pup! (2.2HDi coupe)

Post by DumDum »

Hi all, Didnt know which section to put this in as it could go in engine, brakes or electrical so feel free to move it as appropriate.

Basically i bought a 2003 2.2HDi Coupe and its got a ton of faults but the biggest annoyance is the fact its in limp mode most of the time.

It had faults when I bought it, the warning messages were, Engine Antipollution Fault, ABS Faulty and ESP/ASR Faulty. Well great I thought, Im gonna de-fap it anyway and the other one will only be an ABS sensor which is no real work to change so ill just use it to haggle for a good price.

Anyway, Ive had the DPF removed and mapped out and the fault codes cleared (I have a few mates with PP2000) but its still throwing a fault about being unable to connect with the DPF ECU

It did have codes relating to dodgy boost readings and the map sensor so I have replaced this however on the dyno it still showed a dip in boost at about 2600 rpm but did make 168bhp and 285lb/ft on a stage 1 map. Ive emailed my mapper back to make sure the map is right but I have a funny feeling theres an underlying electrical issue.

PP2000 was showing that the rear abs sensors were dodgy and i replaced these and cleared the faults but they came straight back without even driving the car saying open circuit and unable to communicate. (3 faults total). Would this be related to the traction control ECU thing that service box shows being somewhere at the NSR of the car?

It was missing its ESP/ASR switch from the dashboard and I found the orriginal to put in and the switch just flashes at me and if i push it it appears to do nothing and theres no feel to the switch, no reassuring click to tell you its done something.

The limp mode is just massively under powered and wont let the engine past 3k. It wont even hold 70mph up a hill on the motorway (2250rpm) foot on the floor. It does sometimes come out of limp mode but goes back in if i get up to cruising speed and stay there for more than about 2 seconds.

The warning messages are still

Engine Antipollution Fault
ABS Faulty
ESP/ASR Faulty

Any Ideas?

Oh and i think the turbo is on the way out as its making a dying turbo noise and also it has an oil leak from one of the turbo feed/return pipes and its smoking a little blue but this I can identify as a dead turbo and fix.

If the dpf has been properly removed from the ecu map, it won't matter what the additive ecu does or says, as the engine ecu will no longer 'talk' to it

(If you want to send me a copy of your engine ecu map, I can check this for you).

Not sure if you're aware, but any engine ecu fault will generate the 'ANTIPOLLUTION FAULT' message, even if it's nothing to do with the dpf / additive system. From your description, the most common problem is likely to be intermittent overboost, which is usually down to a vacuum system leak. (The vacuum system needs to work properly to reduce the boost when required, which is not what you'd expect).

There's a really good article by exboyracer on the coupe club for vacuum system problems, http://www.406coupeclub.org/PHPBB3/view ... 82&t=35570

The noise may be a boost leak, some oil particularly on the intercooler connections is not unusual.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I didnt know about the boost/vac leak things causing the antipollution faults. Think one of its many faults was boost too high or too low so if its still saying that ill start investigating vac/boost leaks.

My mapper says I also need to disable the FAP ECU in PP2000 so Ill get that done in the next couple of days

TB205 did my map. Basically i need to tell the main ECU to stop looking for the additive ECU, this seems ot be normal practice after a de-fap map
