406 2.0HDI 110BHP 'W' reg - wont start
Hello everyone, Im hoping someone can help, I went out in my 406HDI this morning and it was fine, put it on the drive at lunchtime then went to go out 3hrs later and it just turns over on the starter motor but won't fire!
I can't fathom it out as nothings been touched, however i do notice I don't seem to hear the '3 seconds little humming noise' coming from the back of the car when I switch on the ignition. I have an estate by the way..! I have turned it over a number of times over a half hour period and momentarily a couple of times it coughed but never fired up when the key was first turned!
I also notice that the radio display went into 'economy mode' for some reason which seemed weird to me after I kept trying the starter key over and over!
Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated as im stuck on the drive!
Regards
Puggy

just re-read the thread, and edited what iposted b4
it will go into economy mode, to reserve battery power, its pretty normal,
no noise from pump, try the cut off switch, and see if the pump works then,

Hi again Lozz,
Where exactly can I find the switch, Is it near the top of the engine bay and is it like a reset button??

As Lozz says, the humming noise is the lift (low pressure) pump, they do die eventually but it's worth checking the cut out switch first - unlikely if the car's not had a knock or anything but worth a look.

How fast does it turn over when cranking"?
if its slow, then the battery may be needing a charge,
it will go into hedgehog mode if battery is low, (just a thought)

I just went outside and found the big red pushbutton switch right next to the suspension top, i pressed it and then tried the starter but the same happened, it coughed when first turning over but then just carried on turning over without firing up!

Oh by the way the battery is only a month old and turns over well, I was half expecting it to fire up after a '5 second cranking' but it didnt!

if youve got a torch handy:
lift the lid off top of the ecu, and have alook see if youve got a brown relay near it
if so unplug it and plug it back in again, (Making sure its got a good conection,)
Failing that, try a BSI reset,
Dont know what else to sugest, hopefully someone else will post something more use full,
sorry not much help,

look at the cambelt side of the engine,
you will see a black box, lift the lid off that, and you will see the ecu
at side of the ecu, you shouid find brown double relay:
Bsi is what controls, the electrics in the car, abit like a Motherboard in a pc,
There is a guide on how to Re-set it on the forum,
