lock repair - step by step guide

Post by crackpotterpig »

Hello all,
further to my previous post with the remote central locking not working I have decided to describe a way of fixing the dreaded spinning and seized locks on the 406.
Remove the door card and inner foam insert from the door, then remove the plastic guard that partially obsures the door lock by 2 x torx screws and a 10 mm nut.Remove the 10 mm nut off the door handle that secures the door lock assembly, take this off the car and take out the circlip that holds the barrel in the housing.Take the barrel out of the housing and you will see a small spring loaded clip at the base where the barrel connects to the housing. The lock sticks and spins from where it was assembled and the old grease has accumulated, carefully remove the spring loaded clip without losing the clip and degrease it all using a small brush and something like white spirit, cleaning out the inside of the barrel housing and the clip and barrel itself.Re assmeble with a small amount of grease on the spring loaded clip( grease will hold the spring in place whilst assembling) and a small amount of grease on the back of the barrel where it locates into the housing. This will take about 30 mins in total to do, but is a long term fix and will last alot longer than using wd40 or similar being squirted into the lock.
When done the locks work like new. :cheesy:
