We need to fit a replacement motor c/w linkages to our 1997 406.
Questions:
i) Are they handed? our car is a LHD so would we be able to use a secondhand unit from a RHD car, or would we be wiping a lot of fresh air?
ii) Are they easy enough to fit?
iii) Any ideas on from where I can get one sent?
It doesn't rain much in the part of France where we now live, but we have been caught out a few times without wipers in the last 18 months and need to do it for the test.
Reminds me of something that happened many years ago when we lived in S.W. Ireland. My son was driving his little old Fiesta high up along the Atlantic coast road in a howling gale with the rain lashing us virtually horizontally when the wipers gave up the ghost. I had to stand up through the sun roof and manually swish the wipers from side to side at high speed for him to see, unable to keep my eyes or mouth open because of the wind. After that experience we became more sophisticated, and tied strind to both wipers, alternately pulling one then the other, thankfully from the interior of the car. I don't think the Gendarmes would let us get away with that one here.
In anticipation,
Joan

Re: Windscreen wiper motor
Hello.
It looks like they are handed, both the motor and the linkages have different part numbers lhd/rhd. The wiper motor is also different on the later facelifted cars (although the linkages are the same)
I've not changed one, although I know others have so you might need to wait for a proper answer. I think it's fairly straight forward though, the hardest thing will probably be removing the wiper arms because you'll probably need a small puller to get them off. Don't try to lever them off against the 'screen, unless you want to buy a new one
Not sure where you'd get one for a left-hooker, do they break cars where you are? Did you ask on passion-406.com yet?

Re: Windscreen wiper motor
Thanks for the info about their handedness!
New here they are over 240 Euros, plus tax. The problem with visiting scrapyards is that there aren't any really local as we live amongst prime farmland and we can't drive far as we have no test 'cos we need wipers!!
I have to do all the driving as I am the conscience-less one, so I could set off on my own one day and scour the wider area for yards. I will definitely try the 406 website,
Thanks again,
Joan
