MOT Failure - Towbar electrics

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

MOT Failure - Towbar electrics

Post by MacWomble »

This one surprised me but after submitting my 2.1 for it's MOT it failed on a broken towbar electrics socket and broken socket mounting plate.
A new one to me but one for the caravanners amongst you to be aware of, apparently it came into the test recently and having a smashed socket and electrics hanging by their wires is a no no.
I have double electrics but can I unwire and remove the broken one and pull the cable back into the car and insulate it's ends ? Are their any electrical implications?
I can replace the mounting bracket with a single for a few quid thus keeping one socket and hopefully passing the MOT.

Thanks in advance,

Hi mate, I have 2 sockets on the back of my car but only one is wired in and it passed the MOT no problem.

A new socket is cheap and easy to replace to save hassle with cutting wires about, but if you only tow trailers then yes, just get rid of the grey one you don't use... 8)

I think the failure was because it's casing was smashed and also because the mounting plate was broken and it was hanging on a wire.
Having thought about it I reckon your suggestion is best, buy a double mounting plate and a second connector. If that's all it failed on i should put my hand in my pocket !

I'd be inclined to unplug the socket through the clips in the boot and tell them it's disconnected and no longer in use ?
