406 FAN HEATER STOPPED WORKING

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 FAN HEATER STOPPED WORKING

Post by womble171 »

Hi all,

My 1999 V 406 heater blower has packed up again
The last time this happened, the key stuck in the ignition and I needed a new barrel (not sure if that was a coincidence though)

I have read through the forum and I found a topic where it states the blower takes its power from the ignition?
The 40amp fuse next to the big red wire has not blown, but there seems to be no power getting to it, no bleeping from my multimeter when I take the fuse out and put the prongs in?

On the post I read to diagnose problem, they bypassed this somehow to save buying a new barrel. Can anyone point me in the right direction as how to bypass this please?

Thanks lozz, I am more confused now though?

I did find a post regarding it but the member said it's the red wire next to the 40amp fuse that powers the blowers and he just fed into it with an inline fuse from the orange (possibly yellow) wire and that worked? Is that what you mean, or is it the yellow one that actually feeds blowers?

Will keep on trawling the forum. Thanks :)

Theres around 3 ways to bypass them, all are risky,

1. send feed from battery -using a seprate switch too blower motor, (not good)
2. splice into green wire on blower motor feed into thick red wire,
theres another way as well but ive forgot,

running a feed to it Makes the wire get hot & can Melt, possiblilty of interior fire,
igot away with a strand of cooker wire,

sometimes you can get a warning on MFD Charging Malfunction, depends on how you by pass them,

ijust peice of cooker wire crimped both ends (^) shaped and pushed ends into the conector Green iirc on blower motor
and fed other end onto Red wire Fuse box ithink -its been awhile so imight be wrong, its in one of the threads somewhere,
(saves cutting into wires, afused link wouid be best too,)
try all at your own risk mind,

The first link was the one I took info off about bypassing wire, the second one I cant seem to find the pic where it says look at pic?

I have took a couple of idiot proof pics to try an help me make the right connection as although there is only one red, well deep red wire, (1) which I think is the live feed to the blowers, there are 2 yellow and orange ones?? (please excuse the crude editing)

At the ignition with the engine running I am only getting 0.4 from the red wire (1), but don't know which ones of the yellow or orange to link up to,(2,3,5 or 6) or does it not matter as long as it is getting 12v when engine is running? Lucky I can at least count to 7

I have some wire from the other ignition barrel that broke to connect with, and I have my inline fuse holder (7) on standby.

POST UPDATE ON BROKEN BLOWERS.

Hopefully this will help some other forum members out if they have same problem that i am, no voltage to the 40amp fuse for blowers....

In reference with pictures:-

1 = Live feed for blowers

5= Live feed when ignition is on and engine running

7= Source an inline fuse and some heavy cable. I had some ignition cable from a previous dodgy barrell, but i have read that 1 strand of cooker cable works too (thanks lozz). Bridge cables 1 and 5 from the ignition with number 7 in pic (no expense sparred with the editing)

Result = WORKING BLOWERS :cheesy:

hey I'm about to do the same thing on mine.. just wondering, if I patch the yellow into the red cable before it reaches the fuse box does it not go through a 40 amp fuse in the fuse box already before going to the blowers? Just wondering if I can do it safely without an inline fuse.

also:

I dunno if itll be of any use to anyone but according to Haynes the yellow wire(5) goes on to parts in the washers/wipers, audio, electric windows, electric mirrors, interior lighting and cigar lighter systems. The orange one (2) seems to go to parts in the cooling fan, engine management, airbags & pretensioners, heater blower(passenger air thermistor) systems. Both have something to do with the central locking system.

Would the yellow or orange wire be OK over the long term with the extra load? Or should I treat it as a temporary fix only?

Thanks for posting your solution, it's been very helpful!

Hi,

Iwouid suspect that you have got a faulty ignition Barrel,

wiggle key in the ignition barrel & see if heater blower starts to work,

Worth a try mate but they never came on, all fuses seem okay too.
