12v socket

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

I can't think of anything else you'd need to do :? Maybe check the polarity but I believe it to be impossible to get it wrong as the connector only fits one way.

I'm talking about removing the complete unit and retrofitting a complete new unit

Ah, I presumed by adaptor.. I've only seen the ones that plug into the the lighter socket so I've no idea. Any chance of a link?

The plug in adapters are only a fiver in petrol stations. I have a couple of them and so far so good they do the job, even in the 24v lorry.

Can it be washed? I'd still go for the original as if you replace it with something for 99p you'll probably have to file the hole bigger, chop off the connector and use mickey mouse spades and loose the illumination. These 99p jobbies are for putting another socket elsewhere in addition to the car's existing lighter socket, in the glovebox, boot or wherever.
