Air bag pre tensioner plug

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Air bag pre tensioner plug

Post by Quinny »

Which plug is it for the air bag pre tensioner on a 2002 HDi?

Got the light on, (Has been on since I bought the car 3 months ago.) and it is the next thing on my list to do. Work in progress and all that.

Hi mate, there are lots of threads on here regarding this.

Basically, there is a troublesome orange wire from the passenger seatbelt pretensioner, to a connector under the front passenger seat. You can follow this wire from the seatbelt, through some corrugated black plastic and under the front seat. Its a bit hard to follow it by eye so just feel away - it will end up with a separate connecter just behind and above the bank of connectors under the seat. Normally unplugging and replugging this connector does the trick - you may as well give all the connectors a wiggle while you are there.

Do not do this with ignition on or you will get an airbag in your face - you must have the ignition off for at least 3 mins to wait for the airbag ECU to go to sleep. I normally do this airbag thing after opening car door but before putting the key in the ignition - just to be sure....

If the airbag light stays on then PP2000 will confirm which airbag has the fault, does your horn work btw?

The horn does work, just ask the wife.....

Seriously though.

Yes it does, but needs a lot of effort, and only seems to work at the bottom of the horn push.

You need to remove the air bag bud & clean up the four contact's on the steering wheel & on the back of the airbag/horn pad.
If you've not removed this or another before read steve earwigs post on com2000 removal before tackling 8) .
Mine is great now I've cleaned my contact's, the one's in the wheel are brass insert's & they tarnish / the ones on the horn pad are galvanised & they too tarnish  .
I just used a bit of autosol on a rag to remove the tarnishing & then a thin smear of dilectric grease or patrolium jelly at a push to slow down the tarnishing process :cheesy: .
I think I posted some pic's up but I'm not sure :? , must be my age

I only thought I would ask as sometimes the horn goes dead the same time as the airbag light comes on - this is a different fault but the same MFD message.

Next time you disconnect the battery, pop the drivers airbag off and clean the connectors for the horn behind it. It is self explanatory when you look at how it works ( 4 pins and 4 contacts )

My 2003 2.0 hdi has the airbag warning light permanently on.

First happened a few months ago but a wiggle of the plugs put it out. Came on again a couple of weeks ago.

Today I cut off all the plugs and reconnected, but light is still on.

Anything else I can try, or do I need it plugged in for diagnostic?

Any help appreciated, MOT due shortly.
