I've been spending and I haven't got a clue....

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

I've been spending and I haven't got a clue....

Post by Ady1985 »

Right, been getting some little bits and bobs for my 2000 hdi 406 executive estate and now I'm stumped lol.
I've more or less been given the sat nav unit to put in and been offered many other parts which caught my eye but need a few questions answered.

1st one, will the sat nav unit just plug in and work, I.e the plug will fit in regardless?
I know I need the control to work it so I have 1 on order as not there with the car.
2. The sat nav cd rom unit, where will this mount in the boot of the estate and will the wires be there already to just plug in or will I need the wires too?
3. I was offered the whole steering stalk set which has a different steering surrounding to compensate for the chunkier radio controls but noticed the headlight stalk has auto head lights and I don't (but would be sorta cool to have) so by getting this stalk set would that be a plug in and it works set or do I need extra wiring for that?

Any info on these will be helpful, and judging on some details I think my 406 is a d9 pre multi fix (if thats what it is called)
Thanks

1. Don't know, but why bother? The maps are out of date, decent displays are thin on the ground and you'd be much better off with a Garmin etc. anyway.
2. I seriously doubt it but you won't know unless you look.
3. Is this a set of a full-mux car? Yours, being a 2000, will be a semi-mux and will have spindly stalks similar to a D8. I don't know how the sat nav works (doesn't it need a remote control?) but the stalks won't look much different to your existing ones. Btw it's multiplex (fix? )

Lol, I know maps will be out of date but when I've been handed it for a fraction of the price they sell for I may aswell. As for the stalks, the ones offered have cables similar to the bottom set, I haven't looked at mine yet, it also had a cruise control unit on too???? Will this cause any problems on my car?

And as multi fix I didn't know what it was, I read something briefly and remeber multi something lol

Umm, you won't be able to fit those stalks as they are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay different! Yours are separate switches, the ones in the picture are all one big (expensive) bit.

Multiplus? :P

I'm afraid I don't fancy your chances :(

I believe sat nav was fitted on semi-mux cars, but I think the display is different to the mux (multiplex) version.

The CD-ROM goes in the boot on the right hand side.

Even if the loom is there for the CD-ROM you may still be missing the GPS antenna.

Hi, good luck with tinkering.

I believe there are also relays and aeriels etc needed for the Sat-Nav, although have a look behind the right-hand boot liner, I think its a blue connector.

If donor car is a similar age and spec then its worth a punt, keep us updated for future questions.

Plugs that go into the CD Reader in the boot are the large blue one, as above.. plus a small grey one.

A couple of years ago, I did some buying and selling of sat navs, and rather a lot passed through my hands.
Have also tried a lot of the Android phone apps. Kept coming back to the old favourites, TomTom and Garmin.
However, I've now got my built-in satnav working properly. I screwed up trying to clean the laser, and bought
replacement CD-Reader on ebay.

I like the inbuilt one because....
Though the maps are about 11 years old, the vast majority of roads haven't really changed.
The satnav is integrated into the audio system, and when the guidance voice gives an instruction,
the radio fades to let it speak.
Its good fun getting the car working properly.
I'm a bit lazy, and faffing around with USB cables, car chargers, and splatting a big lump on the windscreen
is so much effort.... 8)

I have a 2005 / 2006 disc in my Sat-Nav,

I also have a ' back-up ' copy of it that I could lend you, should you wish to test your Sat-Nav unit... :supafrisk:

I also have a CD reader - which is untested ( Gumby gets first dibs ) and about 5 remotes also for sale.

Others may disagree but I think the Sat-Nav is ace. Very accurate, the street detail as you drive along is quite cool and as Trufflehunt says, no messing around with wires or owt..
