Starter woes!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Starter woes!

Post by gray »

Hey friends , over the past week i have been having starter problems. For days the starter was getting weaker every day so i knew it was on its way out!

i check the battery voltage and charged it overnight many times with no change. after running the vehicle it was getting harder to start , but first start in the morning seemed fine. But over the last week it has gotten worse. One day i was stranded and i checked the starter and it was smokin hot so i cooled it down with a rag and some water and sure enough it cranked over and started, which got me home. I know that when the starter is hot there is more resistance thus needing more amps to crank, vicious cycle. Now all i get is a click and puffs of smoke!

I assume i need a new starter but just wanted to check here if i have missed something?
I have checked connections and ground and they are all tight and seem ok

What do you think?

Thanks Gray

It is a 45 minute job to replace a starter, no biggie really just stick to the 5 minute rule before disconnecting the battery.

As far as I know these starter motors are the same for Citroen and Fiat, but I can find out tomorrow (monday).
