My selected auto electrician tells me that if a BSI unit fails, the only options are to get the original unit repaired or to get a new unit from Peugeot at a cost currently circa £400. He says a used unit from another car cannot be fitted successfully. Given the age of the car, I'm happy to do without immobiliser or remote locking key fobs. Is he correct?
Thanks for any advice .....

cheapest option here is,buy Ecu /Bsi and lock kit off ebay (ignition key from donor vehicle is a must)

Thanks lozz, is that to replace both BSI and ECU, or just to get BSI and matching key?

ithink you wouid have to replace BSI & Ecu, & swap chips over from keys.. Bsi & Ecu is paired up,
There is company's out there that can Virginise a secound hand bsi but it might be costly worth a google.
but then you wouid still have to pairstuff up so not exactly plug &play.

Don't you have to include the instrument panel as well from the donor car? Otherwise strange mileage additions seem to occur. (the mileage stored in your clocks + mileage in donor ecu)

Re: 406 family estate year 2000 BSI
On full or part mux cars the mileage is stored in both the BSI and the clocks.
If either either of them is swapped, the mileage on the pair installed in the car is synchronised to the larger of the two mileages stored in each.
The clocks are not coded to the BSI or anything like that; they're a straighforward swap, so nothing to do here.
I believe the adding thing applies to D8s, but I can't recall a report of this happening. The rationale is that the one that was replaced must have been replaced with a brand new one whose stored mileage is zero.
Lozz is right: get a matching set of ECU, BSI, key.
I've never quite got to the bottom of coding keys to cars (some people say that you have to get a brand new chip). Best case scenario: you need (someone with) PP2000 and to have the secret code (which is probably related to the VIN of the donor vehicle). The remote locking frequency will also be to re-synch.
