Rear fog lights

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Rear fog lights

Post by bostonwayne »

Hi car failed its mot this morning because rear fog lights not working. Its a 1997 2.0 petrol estate and when I switch the fogs on it lights up on the dash but not the actual lights. The bulbs are good and there is no power going to the bulb holders hope someone can help

Might seem odd, but check fuses. Just because the tell tale light is on the dash doesn't mean fuse is good. I just had a quick look at some diagrams and it shows the tell tale to be wired before the fuse.

Also your car would originally only have one rear fog, (offside), the other is a dummy, (unless someone has changed it). This doesn't alter your probable fuse problem, but might save you some unecessary grief if you get one working, but not t'other. It will pass the MOT with one working.

I have always wondered what it would take to have both rear fog lights light up without too much wiring, etc.
Would a simple LHD 406 rear light work? I know mine has the slot for it but it doesnt provide power. Does the actual tail light cluster not provide power or is it from the switch or lack of missing wire?

I think its a missing wire on the left multi plug, its easy enough to run a wire from the right side, will be doing it to mine when I have run out things to fix on mine
Have no idea if the d8 is the same as the d9 though
I have SEDRE if you need any wiring diagrams

My executive estate has 2 fogs, I can't imagine Peugeot having a different loom at the back just for a foglight, maybe the cluster bulb holder is different?

As far as D8 and D9 Coupes are concerned, there is no wiring provided on the nearside cluster. The bulb holder is there and is connected back to the socket via an internal busbar link. The nearside plug doesn't have the appropriate pin in though, so to get it to work, you have to run a single core across from the offside, picking up the feed by whatever method takes your fancy and connect on to that internal busbar link by soldering. If you put a bullet connector or similar in this feed near the nearside cluster, that enables easy removal of the whole cluster at a later date.

One rear fog means more chance of following vehicles* seeing your stop lights.

What I can't understand is if the economy is struggling, why not enforce the law and fine all the idiots misusing fog lights and driving around with one headlight?

I just use my rear fog lights towards tailgaters, flick em on and off as they looks like brake lights kinda. 2 would be more effective.

Dont Know about other models but my 2003 2.0 HDI 90 Est has all the wiring and bulb holder already fitted in the Near side Rear Fog lamp position.

All that is required to get it working is to remove the lamp from the tailgate (accessed by two 10mm nuts covered by round plastic covers on the internal tailgate trim) then remove the bulb holder, which in my case has a spare position for the fog lamp bulb, you will then need to enlarge the hole in the back of the lamp its self, as the factory made hole is not large enough to take the 21w single pole bayonet bulb that fits the bulb holder, I found it easier to use a cone cutter as the hole required is quite big and I had not got a large enough drill bit.

One the hole is large enough for the glass part of the bulb to fit through, you can fit the bulb in the bulb holder, refit the bulb holder to the back of the lamp assy, and put back in the tailgate.

No wiring required

I would stress that this is the only 406 I have ever owned, so it may not be the case with all models.

Regards

Yup I did the above on my d9 estate. As far as the OP goes, maybe you've got a break in the wires somewhere? My bet would be at the hinge.
