Speedo dies for a while 2.0HDI

Post by pugface406lx »

Hello fellow 406ers

I have a 406 estate 2.0HDI YR2000 and have had a speedo problem a while now......usually not long after startup and driving away the speedo needle drops to zero and the car noticably loses some power , its still drives ok but the speedo can take 5 -10mins driving before it comes back on when at the same time I can feel the cars power picks up.....can anyone recognise what I am saying from experience and how to solve this?

Cheers

I would suspect the speed sensor on the gearbox, its mounted just above where the o/s drive shaft goes into the diff. It might be the connector, probably worth pulling it apart and putting together a few times, if that doesn't do it the sensor probably wants replacing. They are not expensive on ebay and quite easy to fit, one screw and a plug.

Yeah, that issue has been covered a couple of times. The reason it feels down on power is that the ECU cuts power when the car isn't moving (or when it thinks the car isn't moving...).

It's either the speed sensor on the gearbox, or the control unit for it. I paid ~£60 in total to have it fixed at my local Peugeot garage.

Mine was a speed sensor and it was doing the same, ebay, £11/£12 and 10 min of my time to fit and all is well, there is 2 different types of sensors but if you get the car up and have a look underneath it's easily noticeable which 1 you need

Those links appears to point to the same sensor (6160-70)
If your car is a D8, it'll need the two terminal type. A D9 will need the 3 terminal version. The 6160-70 is the 3 terminal type.

Thanks to all on this subject of speedo drops to zero. I had the same problem and changed the crankshaft speed sensor on the gearbox. Problem solved for £25. Great site for advice.
