Problem with connection to DiagBox (video)

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Problem with connection to DiagBox (video)

Post by JensJakob »

Hello.

I am really frustrated now after trying to use diagnostic software on my 406 for months now. After all I have bought this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/181415493539?ss ... 1439.l2649 and after struggling with some proper software, I have Diagbox version 7.30. I am using Windows 8.1 but I have not met any problems during installation.

Yet I can not connect to my car. It is a 1999 faceliftet estate with a 2.0 HDI engine. I have checked fuse 14 and 32 in the engine bay since these supplies the diagnostic socket. I have some other hardware, and I have been connected to the car with a WiFi adaptor and my iPad. I guess there are no problems with the socket.

My video illustrates the problem: http://youtu.be/1kfhZEwUMK4

Please help me!

I can't see the video 'because it's private'.

Does the green light come on on the hardware when you plug it in to USB?
Have you installed in Windows the driver for the hardware?
How far do you get into Diagbox before you run into trouble? What exactly goes wrong?

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Ahh, sorry. It should be fixed now.
I have installed the driver, and the green LED is on.

As you can see in the video i can not get further on then I have to select Peugeot Planet and the other thing.

ta

Well I'm in slightly unfamiliar territory here as I use PP2k rather than diagbox.

The fact that it asks you to 'connect a VCI' is suspicious. IIRC sometimes Planet can't use the interface because it's already in use by diagbox; the solution is to unplug it from the usb and plug it in again.

Plain old PP2k doesn't ask for a VIN, but picks it up automatically. The fact that this isn't happening points to the software not 'seeing' the hardware, as would be the case in the above.

One other thing, but I don't know whether it's significant: I normally enter the build code with the leading zero so that it's 5 digits.

So I think it's the software not seeing the hardware.
Check in the device manager that the hardware is there and has the driver.
Then I'd try the unplug-and-plug...

I think you are right, but I can not see any solution. Maybe I can re-install the driver.
I have tried with the zero first on the DAM number but it does not change anything.
Is PP2k Peugeot Planet 2000? Or?

I think your problem may be the fact you installed the software on windows 8.1.

If I install mine on windows 7 I cannot get the software to work.

Using XP, Diagbox and Peugeot Planet both work perfectly.

One other thing, the connections on the round part of the cable can be a little difficult to get a clean connection.

When I've used a DAM number it has always had 5 digits.

Oh crap. The only XP computer I have is maybe the slowest existing PC.
I will try to clean the computer and install the software. How do you get a good connection then?

Not sure about Diagbox as my '03 406 doesn't need it, but PP2000 is pretty undemanding and will run reasonably well on very old laptops.
My current one is at least 10 years old and it's predecessor was built in the last century.

Actually I would like to have the PP2000. Where can I buy it? I have tried more "creative" versions, but I can not make them work.
When I am done and ready for MOT, I have spend more than 100£ on this car just to get the airbag light off.

PP2000 is the earlier version of Peugeot diagnostic software used with the Lexia 3 interface, (the same as Diagbox).

I thought you were noramlly supplied with both, (and the Citroen equivalent), when buying a Lexia 3 clone - maybe you already have it?

But I might say, I have only tried getting the software to work on a emulation of XP. Right now I am trying to clean the old XP machine and then I will try to install the PP2000 software.

Try running te software without plugging in the USB connector - if you get different behaviour you know your laptop is 'talking' to the interface.
If it's quiet in your car you can usually hear a relay click inside the interface when it communicates with the car.
If it doesn't do this, try another car, or prove that your diagnostic port supply fuse is not blown.
(For cars after DAM 9000, this should be fuse F4 in the engine fusebox, for earlier cars it will be F14).

You have the PP2000 (Peugeot Planet) already, it shows in your video.

Regarding the connection, just make sure the 2 sections are firmly pushed together.

You may already have the old PP2k installer on the CD(s) that came with your hardware. It will have version number something like 23 or 24.

On one of my attempts with DiagBox it did indeed just start up the familiar PP2k, but with version number 600. This is the one where I couldn't get PP2k couldn't see the hardware because DiagBox was using it  hence the unplug-and-plug-back-in.
