2.1 diesel cooling fan

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

2.1 diesel cooling fan

Post by hirschhs »

I know there's another thread on this at the moment but as they are different models, I imagine the solution may also be different...

Here's the problem: no a/c on, no engine cooling and it overheats. A/c on and there's some cooling but can still go to 100.
Unplug the right hand plug to the left of the air filter, a/c doesn't work at all but the engine fan is always on.
I'm think relay or some weird electrical connection gone wrong.
Am I right in thinking that the a/c (which works well) has a fan on its own rad and the main rad has another fan?
thanks in advance!

The two fans should run simultaneously, I think low speed for a/c and high for cooling (unless one fan is burgered in which case the remaining one will pulse on and off at full speed if you have a/c on). Not 100% on this as it's a long time since I had one but 100% on running simultaneously. The relays are under a cover behind the grille.

I can't remember what all the combinations of slow/fast one/both are... but agreed this definitely sounds like a relay problem.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.
