Ignition issue

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Ignition issue

Post by davidabra »

Hello. I hope someone can help.

I have a 2001 hdi. A little while ago i noticed that on first attempt to start nothing would happen when i turned the key. The lights on dash would all do there normal thing but the car would not turn over. If i then tried again it would start with no issue. It would do this ever other start or so.

Over the next few months it has increased occurrence and so now i have two failed attempts and success on the third.

I have had a conversation with my garage but he suggested it would have to get worse before he could fully diagnose the issue. I suspect an electrical problem at the barrel over the starter motor etc. but does anyone have a ideas as to what it could be.

Go on holiday in a couple of weeks and would prefer it not get worse and then fail while away.

Thanks

David

I would firstly check that the wires are securely fastened to the starter motor & it's solenoid.
My other Peugeot was a D4B

Connect a volt meter between the small terminal on the starter and earth, turn the key to start, if there is no voltage the fault is possibly the ignition switch, if there is 12 volts but the starter doesn't turn it will be that.
