Display ECC unit is broken

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Display ECC unit is broken

Post by FrankVere »

What is the best way to handle a broken display from the ECC unit of a 406 estate, MY1997? The ribbon has come partially detached from the glass. Can it be glued back on the glass, can I buy the display glass with a glued-on ribbon as a spare part or should I simply buy a second-hand EEC unit with a working display? BTW, what exactly is this type of display glass? Is it LCD? I tried to google solutions for it, but didn't exactly know what kind of display or ribbon cable is used in these displays.

I doubt they're repairable without some specialist tools.
I do have a spare that's been sat in the shed for a while I can let you have for say £10 + postage if you're interested?

I'm assuming this is what you mean? (not my advert just using it for reference)

No, actually, it's the display of this unit:

But thanks anyway for your kind offer.

Nice, but what's your price and would you be willing to send to The Netherlands? No problem if you can't, I can get the part over here as well for 40 euro, but at first when I posted this message, I had hoped to find an alternative solution. The ECC unit is working fine, it's only the ribbon connection on the display that is (now) totally gone. Tried to glue it, but that didn't work. I wonder how they ever managed to do it during production. It did look and have the feel of hot glue and when I finally had it removed, I could see the faint connection strips in the glass itself.

For now the problem is solved, I have ordered a secondhand one on eBay and in the meantime ordered some conductive glue as well. Had my old display repaired with simple household tape and that seems to work pretty well, though the display is not always 'stable' (sometimes element go missing). One thing confuses me though, even before the ribbon cable came loose, the interior temperature display had switched from the range 14 - 32 degrees Celsius to 56 - 88 degrees ? (Fahrenheit).

Is it possible that the EEC display changes from Celsius to Fahrenheit and if so, can I set it back?
