radio has power, but no sound

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

radio has power, but no sound

Post by millard »

Hi all.
I purchased my second 110 HDi Executive estate (2002 model) a few months back and very happy with it so far.
It came with one known fault (yup that's all :) ) which is that the Clarion radio/cassette has power but has no sound.
Any ides where I'd start to look please?
I pulled it out this evening just for a quick visual check of the connectors and wiring and looks fine.
I've searched through the forum for an hour or so but couldn't come up with anything similar.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Millard

hi..

have you checked fuses?
with it being an exec model..perhaps the radio is going through an amp?

not sure if these do tho... someone else might know..

It almost certainly has a separate amlifier - should be in the right-hand cubby hole in the boot, under the satnav, (if fitted).

Fuses to check are, (probably):

Radio permanent live - F10
Radio ignition live - F25
Amplifier supply - F7
(all in the passenger fusebox)
If your display's lighting up, F25 should be OK.
Note an unintended connection to pin 1 on the radio ISO power connector will activate the phone mute, (but it should show 'EXT MUTE' on the display).
If your amplifier's working you normally get a crackle or two if you unplug the speaker ISO connector, (the middle one with 4 twisted pair cables).

If you're not sure it has an amp, check on service box, or post your VIN and one of us will.

Here's a few pics of whats under the cubby holes in the back.
On the right it looks like and amp on top of some kind of CD player ?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/73892103@N02/15316834777/ sorry for the shaky photo!!!

and on the left looks like a CD changer.
So a couple of questions:-

Are these two separate CD units? one either side?

How do I tell if the amp has power going to it? I can't see any easy way of removing it nor of disconnecting the leads going into the back of it as they're very close to the side of the car.

I've checked the fuses but my fuse panel has only one fuse that relates to audio equipment and not a separate one listed for the amp.

(correction- F10 and F25 are listed as Audio Equipment)

here's the VIN plate

The JBL item is your amplifier and the 'CD' player is the drive for the Sat Nav.

Thanks for that MixMan.
Any ideas how I check the amp for power getting in to it?

Right, well I checked the radio for Millard - PP2000 couldn't find the ECU, its the same for the CD player and the A/C and the MFD..??

Put in a spare radio and still no joy - does anyone know where the ECU is that controls this stuff, or is it controlled by the BSI?

I'm fairly sure it 'sees' the radio, cd player and MFD as separate ecus. (Your car should be identical Kelv, worth doing a comparison).

I suspect one of the buses isn't talking - 'VAN Comfort' probably, (or it just isn't talking to your PP2000). Since he has a genuine problem, it's probably not your PP2k.

Did you do a global test as well? I've had ones that won't talk on global test, or won't talk on individual ecu interrogation.
I've even had a few that refuse both, but when you scroll back up to the ecu you want after a failed global test and double-click it, it springs to life. :?

Just might be one of the fuses on the outside of the BSI - worth checking them anyway.

Good luck!

Thanks Eric - I was thinking of doing a BSI reset to er... reset it.

The radio ECU wasn't found on Global test or individual test, although I may be wrong in thinking the if the MFD has problems, the radio won't work ( if you unplug your MFD and try the radio it won't work ) so maybe this is the issue..??

Perhaps I'll try to fit GLXs old MFD and see if the radio comes to life, worth a punt - and as Millard is only 5 miles away its no effort to pop over.
