Random cut-out, high idle, and code P1621

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

You'd be amazed how often 'skilled' people measure the resistance of the mains, FFS.

Dodgy / loose crank sensor may be possible - a few missing pulses might get you high idling speed, but if so, it should be accompanied by low indicated RPM

May be worth looking out for erratic tacho behaviour, (but try and avoid the scenery too).

The nightmare scenario is inadvertertently heating/melting something metallic which in turn burns its way through the battery casing......

Worst shock I ever got was when numpty here tried to test a crane magnet for continuity with a the 4.5V battery / buzzer combination that was a popular piece of mid-20th century test equipment. Amazing how that brought the dry, boring theory of electromagnetic induction to life.

I just bought a Lexia 3 kit (including Diagbox and PP2000) from a UK-based eBay seller for £70.

The idle control valve on the EW12J4 is apparently integrated into the Magnetti Marelli throttle body - so I can't just replace the ICV. A real bugger, since the throttle body has an RRP of £246. I can get a brand new one from bestpartstore.co.uk for £184 though. I don't want to buy a 2nd hand one as it might be every bit as old and unreliable as mine.

However, I'll wait for PP2000 to arrive first, and see what it reckons might be wrong.

How long are car batteries meant to last anyway? I've never replaced one since I started driving in 2007 - and I've had the Coupe since November 2010. Can't remember if the previous owners said it got a new battery during their ownership.

4-5 years tends to be the standard warranty period on quality batteries (last time I looked anyway) my 406 got 11years out of its stock battery

Well, it wasn't the battery. Which died, on Thursday of last week, with no warning. The dash lit up, but the engine would barely even crank.

I replaced that (and I'm not dead! Yay, go me!), and as a result, I now own a few small spanners (7mm, 8mm, 9mm) and a small socket set.

The old battery was a Yuasa and was 9 years old, so it had been fitted when the car was between 3 and 4 years old. I replaced it with a Yuasa HSB012 Silver 5000, which has a 5 year guarantee. £90.

The fault hasn't cleared, so that knocks that idea out. The next step will be replacement of the throttle body. I do have the PP2000, but haven't got round to finishing the setup yet. I can't really afford to replace the TB yet, I'll get the PP2000 up and running, read the faults, and see what it says.

This is the cheapest I've found the throttle body so far:

It's embedded within the throttle body - part of the Magnetti Marelli system, so it's unique to the EW12J4 engine within the 406 range.

I too was going to suggest some cleanage. Some cars don't like it when the throttle butterfly gets gunged up.
