Computer display

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Computer display

Post by pete1968 »

Hi I'm to the club and wonder if any body can help me. I've just bought a 2001 406 2.0 LX HDi 110 from a work colleague which has a non functioning computer/ radio display, although it is still backlit. Apparently it was fine until he disconnected the battery, so I would like to know if there is an easy fix or do I need to replace the unit and if so would it need to be recoded. Also for future reference is there a set procedure for disconnecting the battery. Any help at all would gratefully accepted.
Many thanks.

Hi, welcome to the club

PLease can you tell us what the display screen type is? There is a Type 'B' which has 2 buttons and is backlit by 3 little 5w bulbs, and there is a Type 'C' which is a Satnav screen - no buttons but a circular infra red cover on the right - these only fade when hot and suffer from missing pixels and lines when they get old.

No recoding necessary for replacing either display type - unless there you have the Type 'C' from a different era 406.

As for the battery - there is a procedure for resetting the cars BSI ( the brains that control the gadgets ) which is here - http://406oc.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=10&t ... set#p97438 - which can fix niggling faults...

For battery disconnecting, I just unlock the car, pop the bonnet and walk away for 5 mins - grab a cuppa or something, ( giving the BSI time to go to sleep.. ) then disconnect the battery upon return but without opening any doors ( this awakens the BSI to put on the interior lights.. )

Enjoy the car!

Hi thanks for replying, I have the display with the 2 buttons. I'll try the reset and see if that works.
Thanks

Hi
I've just tried the reset which Ginger Magic suggested but my display is still blank so I'll have to replace it, if anybody has one I'd be very interested. Also has anybody any tips on how to remove/replace it?

Thanks

Replacing them is quite easy, carefully prise off the two blanking covers either side of the display and there will be two torx screws eitherside, remove these and it'll just pull out leaving you to remove the connector.

Have you checked the fuses just incase one blew when they reconnected the battery?

The other possibility is all 3 backlight bulbs gone, (or maybe you only had 1 working up till then).

Reading on the side, but how easy is it to replace the backlit bulbs? I know at least one of mine has gone..

Piece of cake..
Follows Nutskis instructions ( be careful not to scratch the side covers... ) and when you remove the unit you will see 3 white bulb holders on the back. Unscrew each one a quarter of a turn to remove them and just pull the bulb out.
Check eBay item 271413015610 for bulb type.
