Screenwash pump removal

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Screenwash pump removal

Post by piglet »

It's bloody 'orrible outside and I don't want to snap stuff in haste.
Got the arch liner peeled back to expose the pump but it's covered in crap and hard to tell how it goes.
Does it just pull straight out of the rubber?

I would hose the crap off it before pulling it out, minimise the risk of dirt getting in the tank, and you can see what you are doing

Pump removed, cleaned, gently airlined, refitted.
Exactly the same. It was all fairly clean on the inside anyway.

Ah crap :( Going back to your original thread you should check the feed. It's run by 2 relays on the engine compartment board, both are normally earthed and when they're operated either relay switches to live, causing the motor to spin one way or t'other. Normally one or the other fails so you get nothing at all but it must be worth checking first.

I'm making the assumption that it's not electrical as it does operate front & rear and does different things, so it must be spinning in both directions?
New pump should tell me, it was cheap enough.

I seem to remember the boy muttering something about cheap vodka for screenwash, I thought he was joking but maybe not!

New pump fixed it.
Chiselled the old pump open and they are very simple, just a hard plastic impeller and a rubber diaphragm which acts as a flip-flop non return valve.
The diaphragm was looking a bit wrinkled and was very soft.
Will investigate the vodka story further.

Good result there.
406 washer reservoir holds 11 litres, would have to be very cheap vodka methinks

I don't remember a diaphragm  Ah well, it was 10 years ago...

Ethanol does nasty things to some types of rubber, the amount they put in petrol now has disastrous effects on older fuel systems (which is why my old Yamaha started pissing fuel out everywhere :( )

They sell some pretty damn cheap varieties of vodka here, even one called Putin's.
