Plip key battery replacement
My mfd on my 2003 hdi has started telling me the plip key battery needs replacement,knowing French electrics is it just a simple task of changing the battery in the plip key or will it mess up something i.e. the central locking etc?

Yes that is an easy job.
I would advise you to have the replacement battery at hand, so that you can quickly insert it as soon as you've removed the old one. All this "french" (in fact german) electronics seems to not like being deprived of juice for anything over a minute.
Also i remember the advice to not touch the replacement battery with your fingers, as the stuff on your skin might cause a leakage path that will deplete the battery sooner than necessary. If you use a set of tweezers / thumb forceps (right word?? Dutch = "pincet"), use a plastic one, a metal one will cause short-circuit.

How do you know if the plip is actually sending a signal or been short circuited when changing the battery?

There are testers for this, see e.g.:

The frequency is usually 433 MHz.
